I was drive my 32 pickup to work this morning and heard a rattle,,,turned out to be a lug nut rollin' around,,,, All of them were a little loose,,,now is a good time to go back and check them on your car before you start buzzing up and down the highway,, HRP
Funny you mention it, had a knocking noise from my right front coming to work this week and thought it might be a loose caliper on my daily. Got to work and took a look, one lug stud was broken and the lug nut obviously gone.. two other lugs were backed nearly all the way off. Went to tighten those and one of those studs broke. Stole a lug nut from a rear wheel so I had three lug nuts holding it on. Stopped on the way home and got a new set of five studs. Scary to think what could have happened.
Did you by any chance have your lugs torqued by a lube shop or brake shop seeing as how it's your daily? My sister in Austin took her Toyota into one of the major chain lube shops to get the brakes done and a lube. Well, they called her from the lube place later that day saying that the dude working on the car managed to break every single one of the lug nuts off while removing the wheels--not a single lug nut left intact! It kinda makes me wonder if whoever torqued them last had the torque wrench set too high and maybe stretched the lug nuts to the point where they were just ready to break. It also crossed my mind that maybe the dude had the impact wrench set to tighten the nuts instead of loosen--un-freakin-believable.
My dad bought a new car once and drove it off the lot..the next day he drove it back to the F_ _d dealer and told them it had a front end noise..they took it right into the service bay while he stood there. They proceeded to remove the hub caps to look into the problem, when 2 lug nuts fell out of the hub cap. really good dealer prep eh?
I used to be a healthcare assistant in a facility that dealt with traumatic brain injury. One dude that was in there was a total mess, couldn't speak, walk, or do anything, basically gonna be bedridden for the rest of his life. I found out the story-went in to have new tires on his truck, the douchebags at Sears didn't tighten the lugs, he heads out on the Palisades Parkway in NJ, the two front wheels let loose and the truck flies down an embankment. Sears settled for a good sum of money, but that does him no good whatsoever, wife left him, kids don't visit. He could be a fucking billionaire and he still can't do anything.
Hmmm.. now that I think about it, the last time the lugs were touched was at the alignment shop. I didn't even think of that til now, I usually do all the work on my pickup. Just can't align it.
I had a local tire\lube shop put a new tire on an O\T 77 nova I used to have. About a month later it snapped all 5 lug studs off on the right rear wheel while I was driving down the highway at 60mph at 1am. I pulled it off the road, chased down the tire. Got back to the car and after jacking it up I saw the studs were broken. The holes in the wheels looked fine, no damage from loose lugnuts wallowing the holes out. I got a ride home, went back the next day and put new studs in, took it to the place that did it and they wouldn't do shit for me. Even though the mechanic on duty stated that someone must have really overtightened them for them to snap like that. So yeah, sorry bout the rant. Never use the Quick Lube in Narrows Virginia for anything, not that many of you guys would ever be in that little town.
