I've seen front sway bars factory mounted on 40's Fords & am thinking that it would greatly improve how my 31 A coupe handles around my narrow twisty roads & also help out the buggy spring lean when I sit in the car.
Anybody done this before front & rear on an A & if so what donor car should I be on the lookout for? Pictures would be a bonus!

If you have split bones or hairpins, you already have a BIG sway bar (the axle).

  3. The 1948 Ford car frame that I parted out, had a sway bar and a panhard bar from the factory. Factory improvements, till they changed the whole front suspension?

Yep, I had a 46/7/8/ frame that I robbed parts off & thats where I got the Idea, I took the sway bar & both panhard bars off, just checking to see if anybody has done it & if there is any reason not to do it due to the buggy spring.

works great with buggy spring in 40's--I have used the sway stock bar with heim joints to axle/shock mt.--also have used Ch***is Eng sway bar and P&J perch pin peanuts--work well --46 panhard bar works good too or Speedway makes a pretty good one as well

i dont believe it matters HOW you suspend the car... sway bars dont care if its a coilover or a 1/4 elliptic, or any other style spring. its still going to do the same job its supposed to and that is to equalize suspension roll in corners
please correct me if i'm wrong

  8. You are correct, sir!
What kind of front and rear suspension does the subject car have?

    31 A coupe with wa 50 flatty/39 trans.
Front is a 4" drop solid axle, split bones, 40 spindles/brakes, 39 steering box, rear is a 40 axle/brakes unsplit 40 bones, enclosed driveline, A frame lenthened & kicked up 3" with the spring behind the axle in the stock 40 location, panhard bars on the front & rear. I am still in the frame mockup mode so now is when I would like to fit everything.

wouldn't hurt to put one on the rear
probably don't need it on the front with the split bones

A sway bar in the rear tends to make the vehicle oversteer, front bar induces understeer. At least it does on parallel leafs and modern type independent suspensions

  12. A rear sway bar is all you need on these cars.

Paraphrased from Roy Fjastad of Deuce Factory fame.

I have a DF sway bar on the rear of my 32 and 31 on 32 rails roadsters.

Never had a problem keeping up with sports cars on twisty mountain roads, but sometimes they have a hard time keeping up with me....
