    From Me*** Auctions:

...the most outrageous of these creative maverick enterprises was the Turbonique Company of Orlando, Florida. Aimed at the burgeoning drag racing market, their line of products consisted of three basic devices: AP superchargers, microturbo thrust engines and rocket drag axles...

The most outlandish of these devices was the Rocket Drag Axle, which connected mechanically to a car’s differential and, when ignited, surp***ed the engine’s motive force by upwards of a thousand horsepower and launched the vehicle forward at a truly mind-numbing rate of acceleration. The infamous Black Widow Volkswagen Beetle, a basically stock Bug fitted with a Turbonique Rocket Drag Axle, instantly became a drag racing legend by leaving Tommy Ivo’s four-engine Showboat dragster in its dust with a 9.36 elapsed time at 168 mph on Sept.19, 1966, at Tampa Dragway.

Built by tobacco heir Zachary Reynolds of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco fame, the “Tobacco King” 1964 Ford Galaxie was as wild an example of a Rocket Drag Axle-equipped car as one could ask for, and certainly reflected Reynolds’ daredevil personality. *******, pilot, Ham Radio enthusiast and all-around enfant terrible, Reynolds specifically wanted a car that would terrorize everyone with its appearance alone...

Really some cool stuff to think about!!!!!!!

I didn't know that they had been based out of Orlando. Anyone have an address? I wonder what kind of business is there now. Might be kinda cool to see if there's anything left of the original facility although I doubt there would be.

*****in...an engineer I work with ran one in a red VW. I'll get the pics and some history from him Monday. One scary sob!!! and he had some wild rides. Thing is? if you met him you would never had thought this even though I guess he is like 60? something, he is very quiet and low key. When we hired him my boss told me "hey! you and this guy should get a long, he's an ex drag racer" wow......

This will bring insane money. I'm thinking 400-500k at least.

The Galaxie would be bad*** even without the Turbonique on the axle. The motor is a 425HP version of Ford's 427 with a Latham supercharger and 4 Carter one barrel side draft carbs to **** through. You know it would be a fast ride just like that!

Yeah, I'd love to see just what that combination would do by itself (both on the track as well as at the auction ;))

Must've handled real nice with; what, a six inch lift? Holy Moly!
I remember those cars with the Turbonique set ups, though. I watched Doug (McClure, I think it was) run his Turbonique go-cart at Lebanon Valley New York in '65. He was running 186 MPH shutting off at half track!!! (his fuel lines were buring through!) That's the way we did it back then though, and it was SO much better than today.
The biggest problem with Turbonique, IMO, is that they cost as much as a new car back then. 3500 was mega bucks for one performance enhancing device that was illegal for any known drag race cl*** other than exhibition.

This is a Turbonique ***isted ’54, the Lightning Bug, an engineered I work with campaigned thru the early 60’s, sold in ’65. Ran a best of 185. Yes, it scared the hell out of him. Sorry, but this is the best scan I can get.
