Need help with cross member install. I got the frame boxed & tacked the cross member in on the center line measured 20 7/8 back from shackle. The problem is the cross member doesn't sit level front to back. It's tilted back almost 5 degrees. Should it sit level front to back? the frame is bare & leveled front to back & side to side. Looking at the top of the cross member it's centerline is about 1/2" back from the centerline marking on the frame. Anyone run into this problem? Heidts is closed until Monday. Thanks, Ken
whats it going in? that might help for one... pics would definatly help also... the 4.5* might be anti-dive if so, that perfect...
i don't know which heidts IFS you have, but i put a super ride II in my 56 GMC, and the cross member tilts back at the top also. i believe the reason is for caster. my truck drives great. one thing i did different from the instructions though, i didn't use their measurement for centering the cross member. i found the wheels were to far back in the fender openings for my taste, so i wound up moving the cross member about an inch forward from their suggested measurement.

Not the angle of the upper control arm, that is higher than the front. This angle, through a lot of geometric forces in the spindle when braking, generates a lifting force on the frame at the inner A-arm mounts. This is the same angle as the Pinto, which gives the same amount of anti-dive force as the Pinto. Simply put, factory designs work the way they are supposed to in every respect, so why throw all their engineering and testing out the window? This is the only way to incorporate this important feature, no matter what else you have heard. If you cannot see the angle in the upper arm, then the anti-dive is simply not there. Period.
Thanks all for the replies, This is the standard, tubular A arm setup, not the superglide. I have the correct angle in the upper control arm, that is set into the spring hat. It's the lower control arm I'm concerned about, it doesn't sit level. With the spindle in place, the centerline is back from the marked line on the frame.
Figure 4 & 5 show the cross member perpendicular to the frame. The articles in the help section also show the lower control arm level front to back. I think I might place the fenders on the frame to check well center also. Heidts Instructions I found a tech. article at cl***ic trucks also, their cross member looks level... unlike mine!
The cross member MUST be level when the car is at ride height. When you mount a kit like this make sure the frame is at RIDE HEIGHT and not level! Ride height usually mean app 2-3 degrees lower in the front. This i very important. If you mount the kit with all the correct anti dive angles and stuff, and after that change the stance on the car, it's all messed up.
Staleg, That makes total sense... and also in the instructions! I read it as making the frame level front to back & side to side. I dropped it in the front a few inches & repositioned the cross member & it helped. Still not totally level, about 1-2 degrees now. Thanks, Ken
