I remember seeing one a long ways back, cant recall who made it or if they are still made...

a stereo mount where the stereo head unit swings away under/behind the dash. Sort of a spring loaded thing.

    any help?

A friend of mine recently used the mechanism for a pop up headlight from a mazda. The mechanism is mounted upside down and with the flick of a switch moves down from under the dash and forward.

I'll try and get some photos on Thursday.

That would be sweet if you got some pics. I've been considering the same thing.

hey choptop, are you going for the cool factor of having a swing out deck or just looking for a way to hide it? if the swing out thing doesn't work out you can always use an IR sensor for a remote, which if properly located would not be visible to 99% of people that see the car. sensor runs to the deck, CD changer mounted under a seat, in the trunk or something and no one knows.

Looking to hide the unit. But need to see it to be functional (navigation touch screen).

  6. Considering how cheap Ipods are getting, I would recommend using one instead- there are a few great posts on installation, and you could hide the jack under a dash knob or something similar!

Lose the head unit altogether. Just run the iPod to a pre-amp.

If your just looking to hide it, get a head unit with a remote, remote infrared eye and Ipod controls and mount it in the glove box.

Nope... I need to hide it when not in use, then be able to swing it out for use...

it has a touch screen and the mapping comes up on the screen, so it needs to be seen and I need to be able to reach it.

think of the mount this way...

remember the old desks that had a cabinet with a table for a typewriter that would swing up and lock into place so you could type, then swing back down so you could close the door and hide the typewriter?

I'm looking to turn one of those type of mechanisms upside down so that the head unit will swing down and be visible/accessible from the drivers seat when its needed, then swing away up under the dash when not needed.

I recall seeing just such a stereo mount once... but cant recall where...

I guess I could also just mount the head unit in the stock location and have it slide in and out with a hinged plate that would cover it when it is "put away".

but I just wanted to see if anyone recalled those swing away under dash mounts and/or knew if they are still made.

didn't realize it was a nav unit, that makes more sense that you want it to flip out. what car is this in? got a pic of the dash? If there's a glove box, I ***ume you've already considered that?

Hey! This is the kind of thing my husband does for a living, so I'm sure he could help you out. His screen name on here is: hifiguytn

Send him a private message and he'll probably be able to work something out with you.
