One of the best things about the Lonestar Round Up is the town in which it is held - Austin, TX. There is just so much to do in this little oasis of central Texas that it is impossible to see a...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
Matt's El Rancho is great! Bummed I had to cancel my trip. The caravan is somewhere south of Carthage, MO today.
Some people go to Hawaii, Cancun, Paris or somewhere exotic like those places, but I go to Austin for my get-aways. It just kicks that much ass. See all y'all down there..
Some of Death Proof was shot in Austin Kev! I want to check it out sometime when it's freezing up here...
I get to San Marcos for work occassionally. Unfortunately, I've never had time to really "take in" all that Austin has to offer.
Check out the Oasis for the most beautiful sunsets in Texas, good food, and breathtaking cliffs. Threadgills for Home cooking, local beers, and where Janice Joplin played. 5th street for live music, bars, and maybe get a tattoo. and if ya have to drive on IH35..be carefull!!
It's funny... some folks love the BBQ here. I don't... I'm more of a Kansas City BBQ guy. Of course, if given the choice I would eat Mexican for every single meal.
The Hill country IS beautiful! I've been wanting to visit again for a while now, I have family out there. And Wayne Hancock rocks the house!
Ditto and Ditto!! Hard to find really good Mexican food in MN, but when I was in Austin on weekend pass from Ft. Hood (a little outside our allowed radius, mind you) good food everywhere and I totally fell in love with the town. They closed off two streets (8th and 9th, I think) at 10pm or so and just party central, open containers in the street and everything. Thank God the Hilton had a BIG red "H" on it, or I wouldn't have found my way to my room! Can't wait to go back again.
Breakfast at The Magnolia Cafe... up the hill a block or two and across the street from the Contintntal Club. Get chips and salsa with your eggs Benedict..... great hang over killer
In no particular order: Salt Lick in Driftwood -- not the best BBQ in the area but easily the best setting; old Hill Country ranch house with picnic tables, BYOB. Worth going just for the drive. Roadhouse Relics in south Austin -- a real treat if you dig signs (I took the picture at the top of this post there, at the first Roundup in 2002) Balcones Drive between 35th and 53rd -- lots of Mid Century Mod houses Cisco's, East 6th street -- Mexican breakfast mecca since the 50s. Order the migas. Martin's Kum-Back (a/k/a Dirty's), Guadalupe about 30th -- burger dive extraordinaire
if your takin gagray's advice on devils backbone?-----you MUST stop at Riley's on the Backbone. Beer only but your welcome to bring your own bottles. When you wanna get away-----Riley's In Austin. 1) Barton Springs-------The Heart of my City 2) UT-Campus 3) Top-Notch Burgers on Burnett----A REAL DRIVE IN!!! 4) Fran's -----The ORIGINAL Drive in on CONGRESS Im gonna shut up now
Cant remember the name of the place but on my last visit to Austin we ate at a BBQ resturaunt / Gas station. Buy the briscut by the pound and the bread by the loaf. Im willin to go back just for the BBQ.......... AND THE PRETTIEST WOMEN IN THE WORLD!
If you get a chance, run east of the expo center towards Elgin, the apparent hot sausage capital of the world. You have a few choices out there for BBQ, such as Meyer's, Southside and Crosstown (although I haven't eaten there). http://www.gasbbq.net/txbbq.htm You could also run up 95 to Coupland to see the old Dancehall or down 95 to Bastrop to ride in and amongst the lost pines. Then take Hwy 71 back into town to hit everything on South Congress/Lamar or divert onto FM 969 taking the back roads to old East Austin. I'm kind of a East of Austin fan... In order to avoid traffic, I highly recommend using the new 130 as much as possible. Although it is a toll road, it is lightly traveled and runs from south near the airport/Hwy 71 all the way to I-35 just north of Georgetown. Anyhow, y'all be aware Texas Relays are this weekend and so the area around the University will be packed with spectators for that. Good luck and good times, Jon D.
I totaly agree with Ryan on things to do in Austin! However last year my wife and I went to the Round Up for the first time and we saw lots we did lots but the thing that really pushed us over the top was the AUSTIN PEOPLE/TEXAS PEOPLE, we met some of the nicest, kindest most fun people ever ! And most are HAMBers and I keep in touch with most of them ! So have fun this year and I will miss it ! 60'
if you do, take RR 12 off 35 toward Wimberley, it will run into 32 about 16 miles off the interstate. stop by "was" Riley's on th Backbone for a cold Lonestar and one of the best views in the hills, or go next door to the Backbone Tavern and say hi to our ghost', Rusty, Boudreaux, Charlie, Cuz, Tiny, Gene, Hawk or Rotten Ron, one of them will be more than happy to drink your beer for you!
Ryan--good list but I've got to take issue w/ your Mexican food choices. They're conveniently located and all, but pretty gringo. (Maybe even pretty pinche gringo). For the real deal hit El Azteca on East Seventh or Amaya's Taco Village on I-35 in Capitol Plaza. Now that's Tex-Mex. If anyone is ambitious, go out to Avenue B grocery for sandwiches in an old mom and pop style house grocery store in Hyde Park. While you're on South Congress, check out Yard Dog "outsider art" gallery, too. Amy's Ice Cream if you've got kids, or just dig ice cream. Anything calling itself an Ice House... If you have time for a movie go to one of the Alamo Draft Houses and eat and drink as you view. Years ago Alamo had one of thier Rolling Roadshows at a racetrack southeast of town and showed "She Devils on Wheels" and "Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!" drive-in style. Tura Satana was a special guest. Austin rules. I feel lucky to live here. Joe
No offense here guys, but I'm not driving 5 hrs North for tex-mex(I live 2 miles from the Mexican border - can't really call any food north of Kingsville Mexican) That being said - my part of Texas is so ass-backward I'm planning on a trip to the maccarroni grill so my wife can try it. Probably going to hit a few other national chains while we're "up North" May not be everyones cup of tea, but I'm heading up there to enjoy a car show (and Congress) but want to take in some of the different things we don't have here locally in our deprived neck of the desert.
The only place I have been in Texas was Dallas, and I thought it sucked (sorry residents!). I have been wanting to go to Austin for years... Maybe next spring!
i was in fort hood in 1969 and austin was a great town then i spent a lot of time at barton springs glad to hear it,s still a great town
