Have a look at Joe Gibbs Racing! He has an engine oil line designed for flat tappet cams (that's all you can run in NASCAR)
Valvoline VR-1 20/50W racing oil has added ZDDP...$3.35 a quart at Autozone Castrol for Cl***ics 20/50W has added ZDDP... And if you didn't add ZDDP during the break-in of your flat tappet cam it's a mote point anyway...that's when you really need it.
I thought all engines made these days had roller cams? That is why they don't need as much zinc content.
ive been running half delo and half conventional......read this some time back and figured ...it couldnt hurt....
Pull the VC off a honda or toyota or anything else w/ an OHC 4 banger. No roller anything in there. Just a rocker arm running along a camshaft like the good ole days...
I should be more accurate... some do have roller valvetrains, but others do not. The Mazda Miata, for one, Does not.
As Dale Jr. would say "back in the day" would be back in the 60's from old time mechanics and from the engine builders themselves. The zinc thing is probably a new thing and might just be needed for cat equipped cars. If no cat, then WTH, use the non-detergent. The Rotella T sounds like it would be ok too. Simply put, if the rings don't seat properly, then you probably used oil that had detergents.
GM now has a replacement for their discontinued EOS (Engine Oil Supplement), called Engine ***embly Lube. Shows a zinc compound as an active ingredient. I bought a couple of bottles at the local Chevy dealer last week.
The Alliance vendor here www.ZDDPlus has the required additive. It has more zddp than GM's EOS and is cheaper. Click on the site above and read their info on their website. Covers why diesel oils are not the best for gas engines and how zddp wears out so oil changes are necessary @ 3K miles.
Exactly. ZDDP is what you want, and there are a couple of ways you can get it. Either buy an oil that is high in zinc content, or buy a ZDDP additive, and put that in the oil of your choice. I use MotorHead Cl***ic "Hi-Z" (see www.motorheadoil.com) and which averages 1500 ppm zinc, (and guarantees a minimum of 1250 ppm) because I live their "hometown" (Dayton, Ohio), and I don't have to pay shipping costs. But for folks further afield, I would recommend their ZBoost concentrate, which is pure ZDDP. One ounce of which will raise a 5 quart oil change by an additional 700 ppm zinc, it costs only $9.95 per oil change, and SHIPS FREE OF CHARGE. I've been using MotorHead Oil for nearly a year in my '53 Desoto, and it purrs like a kitten!
Brad Penn is the old Kendall. Go to the website and find a dealer or buy direct. They have breakin and regular. Only way to go. Gary
