I drive a 98 cherokee sport right now. The closest I have ever came to wreckin is a 1995 ford f250 with a 5-speed. The brakes were bad and i pulled around to the back of my house and hit a tree(broke the bug deflector off).
yea i'm 35 and i enjoy imports, but i sure don't pull any of that idiotic street racing crap that is talked about in this thread. i know every time i drive my car some idiot kid in a civic that is multi colored with an aluminum park bench bolted to the trunk, and a fart can muffler, tried to act like he's a bad ass. not talking about one kid, talking about the fact there is always one,and the cars look exactly the same. i built my 21 year old accord the same way everyone has built their hot rod,one piece at a time, did all my own body work, talking about hammer and dolly work, not bondo, am doing my own paint, did my own interior, wiring, plumbing, engine work, made all my own custom pieces myself,my own exaust. etc. the only thing i didn't do was the parts that needed welding, have good friends for that and i know some really bad ass tig welders,a skill i cannot seem to master for the life of me. always amazes me. they make beautiful stack of quarter welds,i make an aluminum mess.lol. anyway, there is hope for the new generation, i belong to a site for these cars, that has thousands of members, and almost everyone on the site does things the same way i do, a good percentage are youger. even on an import site we think of ricers the same way you do. actually we make fun of them probably just as much. i like to say we can cure them. we had a guy who joined a few years ago, wanted all the cheesy crap on his car,yet knew nothing about doing real work, with everyone helping him he has learned how to take apart and fix an engine, how to remove an install a transmission, repair his suspension etc. and he's almost cured of the need for crappy accessories. there is hope for the younger people in this hobby. and oh yea been driving since i was 16.never have been the cause of an accident, had a car totaled once because some kids who thought they were cool, came racing up a blind hill while i was turning left at the top of it,high speed at night with all their lights out. of course it was my "fault" i guess i should have turned on the radar screen and been able to see them in the dark. hit me so hard they bent the passenger side door in the buick i was driving all the way to the drivers seat. if anyone had been on that side they would have died,no question about it. also had my current car hit sitting at a turn lane waiting to turn, and some idiot woman on a cell phone plowed into my left rear corner. took a long time to make that right again.
yes. I hate to think of the similarities of ricers with fiberglass shit attatched with self tapping wood screws and duct tape, and other crappy do it your self jobs TO hot rodding inthe day. hot rods are still just way cooler.
I haven't had much help building my car, other than my Dad raising me around cars, and my Uncle teaching me how to run a mill and lathe and welding the stuff I'm too inexperienced to do. I've bought and paid for everything on my Comet and I've grown out of that invincible stage. The Honda came the way it is from a used car lot, bought with the insurance money from the Z28 I had in highschool. It went water skiing on the way to work one day so I got something that's a little more affordable and actually goes in snow. I'm not selling the Honda unless gas quits being expensive. I filled it up last Monday and I'm at half tank. I am going nuts because I want to get the Comet fixed up and on the road after not being able to drive it all winter. I deleted the radio, heat, rear seat, and it's getting buckets, more gear, and Edelbrock heads when my tax stuff comes. It's as fast as I can afford and I did put 4k miles on it last year.
yes i saw one today with a front lip screwed on a civic, the lip was too wide,so it was attached with LAG BOLTS and the seams were duct taped. and of course NOS stickers all over it. like we say on the site i'm usually at,those stickers give you ten horsepower each lol. i am proud to say my car has no fiberglass, no body kit ,a very low profile rear lip from n escort gt that actually does something, no NOS!!!! and it still has carbs and manual windows.
i got my wife a civic just like that, fixing up the body back to decent. nice daily driver but slow. 1.6 pea shooter and slushbox. but it gets good gas mileage. after the engine mods in my 86 it doesn't get such good gas mileage, will be even worse with the twin carbs, but it's not for driving everyday.
It went straight to video in Oz, " because American test audiences didn't get it." What's not funny about "The Dildozer"
Yea I don't get many of the kids my age either. I grew up around engines and cars all my life and never wanted anything to do with any type of rice rocket. I'll be turning 21 in about 20 days and if it weren't for the fact that I have a truck payment on a '06 Silverado W/T and go to college full-time as an architect major I would have something worthwhile to post on these boards. In the mean time I'm just using this website to learn about older cars and trucks and as a motivation tool.
I'm on the other end of the spectrum. My wife and I have 6 kids in their 30s. We recently lost one to "bad choices", and something came to my attention: Of all of the people I know who have lost a child (about 15)...they are all boys! The ages go from about 18 to late '30s. It must be testostrone, adrenylin, stupidity, or fearlessness! It reminds me of the old saying "Hold my beer, and watch this!" I'm not making judgements...this has been happening for over 25,000 years...just making young guys aware. I have had 3 times in my life that I came very close, and they were all from bad choices. I guess God figured I needed more than one lesson, to learn anything! Not everyone makes it.
nothing wrong with that. for the record i was able to watch about ten minutes of that fast and curious movie before i became nauseated and had to turn it off. wasn't it the third one where the kids watched it and "drifted" off of the parking garage roof? it must numb the brain.
I watch fast and the furious so that I may wallow in my hate for that culture, those kids, that music, those movies. yeah sure i'd take the girls for a ride but thats a seperate issue. I am proud to have NEVER been interested in that fad, im only 25. Never had spiked hair, never blasted linkin park, and never aspired to look like a character from the matrix movies. When the time came for me to sell my POS 4x4 offroader daily, I thought about honda for gas millage but NO I WENT CHEVY!!! I got a new chevy gas saver thats just as good as an import. And yes, it will always remain bone stock... well might throw some pinstriping on it.
for all of those guys who drive 110 through crowded traffic ILL BE THERE WAITING.... Here's the best advice. Worry about yourself when your on the road, (unless you are racing on a back road), and the police will take care of the dumbasses who cause senseless deaths and immature acts on the roadway. Im not a dick cop, I love cars, I always have and always will. I dont pick on people because of their cars. I do my job when Im at work, and only when Im at work. I pick on people who put other people in danger. The world should be safe, but stupid people are allowed to reproduce and make stupid kids.
Be glad you are not in LA. It is like that everytime you leave your house. And it is NOT JUST THE KIDS, it is 85% of the adults also. My estimate is around 85% of the adults here act like bad teenagers on the road and other places. Surreal. The funny this is that people in LA don't even really recognize this. A bunch of inconsiderate self centered self important people all in one rat race so they can buy a tiny cheaply made 800 sq ft house in a crappy place for $800,000. It is really funny and sad that people here don't even realize that 85% of the people here from every group of people are worthless drains on society. Unless the rest of the country ( the real US of A) does something quick, LA and it's idiots are your future. It is probably too late.
i wish they would do something here, but no one cares. i can't tell you how many times i've almost been hit by complete idiots or PEOPLE ON CELL PHONES!!! you can buy a hands free thing for under 20 bucks, yet people insist on driving all over the road and paying no attention, because they have that head list to one side, with a phone glued to their ear. don't even get me started on text messaging. while driving. ought to be a felony with mandatory jail time if you cause an accident while doing this. it's common sense, you can't look at a tiny screen and type with tiny buttons while DRIVING!!!
You have to have a license to drive, a license to hunt or fish and a license to own a hand gun, but any stupid fuck can have kids.
im 15..i dont drive but i will be soon...theres a lot of stupid kids in my school...one time i saw like 5 of them playing tag in there trucks running into eachother..idiots...one girl just 2 days ago rolled her car end over end like 3-4 times...lucky she was wearing a seat belt...man theres a lot of stupid ones out there...what i hate is that im pretty much building my car and gotta be careful and pay for gas and all that...kids at school get handed new cars and trucks and dont gotta pay for nothin..wreck it and they get a new one...not cool Jimmy

dont even get me started about texting. I once gave a girl an OWI because she was drunk, 18, texting and Tboned a BRAND NEW chevy 1500 with her Ford Contour and flipped him on his side. She said "I NEVER SAW HIM" I asked he how, she said I was texting someone. She blew a .160 or so. I text, but then again I type while I drive also. The joys of being a cop i guess. I have to do 6 things while I drive. I just dont do it when people are around, and I dont even look at my phone when texting. I just type it and if its wrong oh well. they'll call if they cant figure it out. lol Im so glad I dont live in LA. I'd go crazy with all of those selfcentered ASSHOLES out there, aka. CELEBRITIES.
hey ive been there and done that. i have paid for every car ive had but one and it was a freebie just to get it out of his yard. but you know im going to be guilty of the same thing with my daughter. im buying the wife a new car and giving her the wifes ride. but i told her and lord knows im sticking to it come hell or high water, if she wrecks it im not buying her squat!! ill let her borrow my old BMX bike but thats it!! you know what you will do the same thing for your daughter when or if you have one. something about when they sit on your lap and tell you they love you..................
im 20, and i like to think if you ask the one person on the forum (Gene, DamnFingers) what im like, he'd say a good kid with some common sense...not a ton but enough! I dont' go 80 in a 50, i may go 55 to stay with traffic. I don't drive like a fuck head, and I am actually ticket and accident (of ANY kind) free. My parents bought my car, and pay my insurance, you wouldn't pass that up regardless of how bad you think you would. Fact is, im in college, doing well, and trying my hardest to do what I can for myself. I am building a hamb-unfriendly ride with MY money, MY time, and MY hard work. I live a nice life, but i respect the ever living shit out of the things I own as well. I have never wrecked a car that I have owned or driven, except that parking pole in daytona.......that was a pole i couldnt see! no damage! I was taught VERY young that if I take shit for granted.....it gets taken from me and NOT given back. ever. I can remember breakin an RC truck when I was like 12, from radio shack, of course i went to my dad asking for another, i was 12, thats what 12 year olds do. Know what he did? Took it and threw the thing away, "shouldn't have broke it". It's worked so far.
Truly an interesting read. I have to agree common sense is on a complete low today. I'm 16 and go to a school where everyone's always trying to race their POS's. I don't drive my ass to school but after 14 break ins within a week, eff that. There are a ton of rice guys at my school, all bragging on how our American V8's are junk and they could build their 1.1L Honda whatever it is to be as powerful as a big block, and beat any muscle car. I stand my ground. I am a Jeep guy but I also have a very soft spot in my heart for hot rod's, and that's why I'm on here. Another thing I seem to think is on the low as well is common decency... C'mon, I hate going to school because of it.... Oh well! Oh, oh! I do! Willys Flathead!
I am a 13 year old, and luckily I don't know anyone that can drive or has that much interest aside from me, but there are tons of kids that also seem to be future ricer kids. NOT MY SORRY ASS! I'm trying to buy a 48 Chrysler right now. Even the kids that think the latest import-sports-convertables are awesome think it's hot shit. So hope isn't totally lost. Now, for my rant about the private catholic school down the street. Kids there have nice cars. They go blasting down the street after school gets out and especially at sporting events.. I can't wait to burn some rubber outside of that freaking school durin' a football game, or even add some flamethrowers to get back for all the times I've been woken up. EDIT: I saw a civic with tailfins (failfins) yesterday.. Musta been bondo'd on..
Nevermind... some of you get it but most of you are too stuck on the word Honda. Ignorance is bliss I guess...
'spare the rod, spoil the child' is my take on it for parents' roles. after several years volunteering with jr high and high schoolers, parents are hardly involved in their kids' lives, they just give 'em stuff and shuttle them from one event to another and do very little parenting/teaching/disciplining. most kids' role models are our celebrities and movies. and now we see the results of how well that works. I got my ass handed to me by an oak paddle, leather belt or dad's gigantic 40-year-mechanic's hands when I stepped outa line; smart kid or not, anyone can figure out how to avoid that in the future...seems to have worked alright for me. haha, my couple year old niece owns my brother's soul!
well i have one because they used to have a little bit of style, mine is over two decades old, not many of them on the road anymore. lots of sedans but very few of these little hatchbacks. the ones today have no style a civic looks just like a toyota looks like a kia etc. when mine came out in 86 it looked different then a lot of cars on the road, plus it had the flip up lights which still work perfectly after all these years on the original motors. i keep it because it's fun to drive, had a great suspension and had a motor that had more torque then any other honda for years. a lot of these young kids want to know why i don't swap in a later model motor etc. i guess i just like my old heavy iron motor with carbs. people are starting to finally show interest in it,i've had it at shows as a project, and a lot of people can't believe how old it is,it still looks modern in a lot of ways even though it's from the regan era. anyway not all of them are junk, as far as modern ones i will say they are, we have a 98 and everything is breaking on it at less then 150000. but some of the old ones were nice cars. just looked at a 70's 240 z at the yard, they were beautiful cars, straight six dual carbs, rear wheel drive, they actually had chrome. and everything wasn't covered in plastic parts.
