a truck needs a bigger front bumper, heavy enough to drop it a few inches more.

  2. Throw it in a hole...

Its your truck and you can do what you want with it but I would hold off on lowering it.
I would not do anything I could'nt undo. I know its the style now in some circles to drop these trucks to the ground and put big inch wheels on them but style is very fickle. In the late 80s multi color neon paint jobs with goofy graphics and billet was all the rage.....Where are they now.
Meanwhile the more conservative rods that were built like 1950 were cool in 1950 were cool in 1989 and are still cool now. I know they slammed cars in the 40s but those were Customs not nessesarily hot rods and very seldom were they trucks.
You can never go wrong with stock or slightly modified.
You can get a real early 60s look by a mono leaf up front. It bolts on and can be easily un done. Leave the rear stock. Stock or chrome steelies up front with revereses on the rear. Put tires on it with meat, like the vehicles on American Grafiti. You do'nt see pickups slammed and you do'nt see 20 inch wheels with tires with 2 inch sidewalls in that flick. Build it like rods were built in 64.
Lowered a little all the way around with the rubber rake mentioned above would be cool but IMHO dont slam it. Stick to early mid 60s wheel styles. Stock, Chrome style stock, chrome reverse, smoothies aka baby moons, slotted, 5 spoke, and the only cool thing to come out of the 80s Centerlines.

From that angle the front tires don't seem to center in the wheel wells or are way too far in.

Looks MUCH better. Throw some nice wheels on it, rake it a bit with tires and drive the hell out of it.

That thing needs to be low enough to barely be able to slide a pack of Camels under the doors, you can still drive it.... well somewhat!
I remember my neighbor's mint green '56 F-100 Big Back window was about that low back in 1965 and he drove it to work daily.

I like it with the 6" drop...

Not always, but the 6" is probably much more economical to do than going any further...

I dig the 6-inch drop, more aggressive, but still truck-like. Lowered is good, but I'm definitely not one for making vintage pickups look like ground-s****ing '90's mini-trucks...
Plus, if you ever need to get rid of it you'll find it's much easier to sell with an unaltered bed.
Not sure if they're cut, but I like the way these sit.

  10. Here's your problem with asking for opinions-you get a whole bunch of them, they are all different and in the end it will still be up to you to decide. Personally, I think cars/trucks aren't low enough til they touch the ground (this does not apply to EVERY car-muscle cars and true hot rods are exempt). And even laying rockers the trucks could still be used as an every day driver, and parts runner. You just have to build it with that in mind. The 6" drop looks much better then stock, I would go lower though.

That's what everyone who cares about concours and original stuff says. They say the value of the entire vehicle goes down big time once you start cutting and drilling into major frame/body parts...

Also, I've been storing all my original parts which I replaced with better stuff. For example, I've kept all the entire original exhaust system with the unique crossover pipe design and manifolds and everything. I've also got all the original trim stored away. I figure if I ever sell the truck, it'll go for a lot more with all the original parts to boot.

Does anybody know who owns this truck? How could I contact him? It looks like it has about a 6" drop.

    What's that, about a 9" drop?

Keep an eye on ebay, and you could probably score some used ones... I think the firestone bias plys would look cool on there.

ya know.. there ain't a damn thing wrong with an old truck just being an old truck.

you will never look back and say to yourself "damn, I sure wish I hadn't just left that old truck normal"

6" drop looks good. stock looks good too.

I think the 6" drop looks awesome ... it looks good, not too much. I like a sensible lowering job on a truck. Definitely go WWW and lose that step bumper. Nice truck!

If you are going to take the time to make it a little custom by lowering it you mind as well just go the extra step and cut that thing up.. cut the bed and drop it low.

To lower it 6", all I would have to do is flip both axles above the leaf packs, and notch the frame above the front and rear axle. I'd just have to weld some spring perches to the underside of both axles, and bolt them up real tight.

As far as I can tell, this is the cheapest and easiest way to get this truck substantially lower. Plus, in a day's work I could flip the axles and have it riding at stock height again!

If I got rid of the current rear bumper, do you guys think a roll pan or a regular bumper would look better?

I personally like the look of a nice bumper on the back of a truck ...

I have a stock bumper on the back of my '60, which I believe to be something of an uncommon option.

If you can't get a stock one, the Chevy bumpers don't look bad at all.

I believe these are available repro'd.

Here is mine as it currently sits. I still have the straight axle up front with reversed mono leafs and an axle flip in the rear. I have a bit of a clearance issue in the front. I left in the bump stops till i get my oil pan switched, resulting in frequent bottom outs. i like the stance, however i think that i am going to go to the IFS if it doesent sell. My thought is that the IFS would help with a few issues like the the sloppy steering. for the rear, if it stays at that height, i can get by with just a C-notch, not a full notch. My problem is that i LOVE the look of the slicks in the weeds. Never mind the wheels and tires....i know they need to be WWW & steelies!

by the way, i can get you a few more pictures if you want-let me know.
