I sold a truck on ebay.
He sent his 500. deposit, then asked if he could pay the remaining balance via paypal 2 days later.

I said yes, if he added an extra $50. to cover fee's. He said no problem.

He paypal'd the balance of 1700. the next night. I promptly transferred in to my bank account, as I always do.

1 1/2 days later, he calls to say he made a mistake and paid from his bank account, and meant to pay with a CC
And would I refund his money, and he'd quickly repay via CC

I called Paypal, and they said that since I hadn't gotten the money yet, by the time I did, and resent it to him, then he resent it back to me, that it would easily be another week before I'd see my money.

I called him and said I could not do that. I was counting on that money for something right away.
And maybe he should advance his CC to make up his low bank account.
He said..OK, it was my mistake. I'll figure it out.

Forward the next evening. I check my email, and get a Paypal email saying I got another 1700. from this guy.
So I call Paypal again. They tell me to hit the Refund button, and send that 2nd payment back.

I send him emails saying..WTF, and he finally replys that he's sorry, and that if I got the money from my account, then that's fine. He'd call when he hears from the shipper.

Forward an hour ago. I check my email, sure enough, I get a email from Paypal saying that they got a stopped payment from him or his bank, and put my Paypal account $1650.40 in the negitive.

I'm furious. I emailed him asking WTF!!

I withdrew that money and it's already spent. I'm laid-off, and don't have anywhere near that money right now to screw with.

I did as I was to do, and followed the rules.

Anyone have any idea what may happen? Am I screwed since that money is gone?
Will it end up back at my bank with a huge NEG. balance?

    I'm so pissed......

That suck's! I don't like that transfer shit. I only take money order, or cashier check. I just got hosed by someone we all know, but thats the way it goes. I am not going to leave negative feedback (it's he said, you said crap.) Tim, GE is hiring in Evandale.

I feel for you, don't know a thing about paypal, am never going to learn. Cash money or money order, is all I will do, and the M.O. has to clear before I let anything out of sight. Good luck.

Evandale is? I'll have to call the pref. hire dept. monday. Thank you.

As for the paypal/ebay mess. I'm really much more than pissed. He doesn't have the balls to answer when I call his cell. He just emails me back.

I would unplug that bank account from paypal pronto. Let them figure it out. Yeah that will pretty much hose you from pp for a while but it's better that taking a big hit.

What does that mean? How and is it going to make it worse?

I'm the damn seller, and I still have the truck, title etc...

And I got his 500. on wed., so I'm not sure he's trying to dork me, but he's a jackass, is more likely.

Lots of points here. All should heed them. First is that this isn't making sense to me. You should have been able to refund the first payment and then accepted the second one BUT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO THIS. NEVER!!

All he has to do after getting your vehicle is do a charge back and Paypal will find for them because you can not prove by their required methods that you delivered the item. (they only accept USPS delivery confirmation that can be confirmed online).

NEVER accept Paypal for someone picking something up from you either for the same reason. (Unless you know them of course). They pay you, pick up the wheels and then claim to Paypal they never got them and you can't prove to Paypal that they did.

I would do as said and close out this account. Let Paypal sort it out. By then hopefully the buyer will have contacted you on the mix-up and fix it or you'll have resold the truck.

I would have told him cash green money when he picked the rig up along with the 500 paypal no return deposit.

It looks like you got burned by a case of buyers remorse.

The biggest problem I have had selling on Ebay is that all too many bidders can't seem to comprehend what it actually costs to ship an item. They bid on a 50.00 item 1500 miles away that goes in a 60 x 30 x12 inch box and weighs 55 lbs and balk at the shipping costs.

When he called me wed. afternoon, the 1700 hadn't arrived to my bank.
It takes usually 3 days for the transfer from paypal to your bank.

I told him NO to the refund of the first payment, because I needed the money, and had already waited 2 days for it.
It showed up thursday morning, we withdrew it from that account, as we always do.

If I would have refunded payment 1, it would have been another week before I could of gotten payment 2.
    I wasn't prepared to wait.

I don't know how he could put a stop on a electronic transfer 2-3 days later.

If I understanding you correctly, you got $500.00, then $1700.00 that you transfered to your bank account. If that is correct it sounds like pay pal is not seeing the fist transfer. I never use paypal, I like cash or wire transfer. I think you should be able to get it sorted out good luck

No, they see it just fine.
It shows up on the ledger the next night after the 500. deposit did.

Then another 1700, payment shows, and then shows refunded to him, because that's what paypal instructed me to do.

So now my paypal account is neg.$1650.40. They say it will take 5 business days to investigate.

Then assbag just emails saying he will transfer 1650.40 into my paypal acct. to make it right!!

    Isn't that paying twice then?

Will it get back to my bank acct. and make it neg.?

I called again just now. And was polite. He won't answer. Just emails.

Anyone live near Bridgeview ILL ??

Right. O.K. Sounds like he is going to make it right. I wouldn't get too upset yet.

It's still not wise to take Paypal in these situations. PITA to go after him in court if something goes wrong.

Try www.revolutionmoneyexchange.com No fee's and no chargebacks. They still could do a C.C. charge back though.

He just ebay messaged me that he'd paypal me 1800. now to cover any fee's I might get.

BUT.....Will it still get back to my bank and cause my acct. to go bad? Meaning neg. balance???

Isn't going 1700. in the neg. a felony???

Paypal's last email said it would take 5 business days to resolve this issue.
    That helps me now:(

Just remember that if he sends you the 'exact amount' that was refunded to him, you'll still have to pay PayPal a fee to receive it back. Remember that paypal charges you to receive money, and by him forcing you to refund it, it's going to cost you more $$$ to get the cash back.

The other thing is that you can now make him pay you COD, and say screw paypal. Would it be wrong to be paid twice for the same truck? Wait... don't answer that.....

The first thing you need to do is call the customer service department of you bank and tell them that any transaction from PayPal should be stopped or blocked due to this error on their part. The bank will do this for what should be free of charge, and for as long as you request it. Kind of a 'reverse stop payment' thing.

PayPal sux. I used it to buy something and got burned on the item. Filed all the snad reports and Paypal even had me file a police report. Long story short, PayPal told me that if I returned the item, they would TRY to get my money back, no gaurantees.

Keep the guys $500.00, Hope yer not screwed on the rest.

I just told him, through ebay messages, to paypal me $1810.

That covers paypal's fee's again, and an extra 55 bucks in my account incase they charge me a NSF fee.

I have to do this, because the original 1700(1650.40 to me)payment was transferred to my bank, withdrawn and spent. And I don't have the money to replace it with.
    Sucks being laid-off......

All this because I thought I was being nice by letting him pay this way.

    Last time.

BTW, How do I protect myself from him doing what someone up top said, and getting the truck, and claiming to paypal he never did?
He's sending a carrier to get it.

The carrier should give you a copy of the shipping info.. Then you take a pic of it on their truck....Keep the carriers contact info so if it becomes a problem... they will say it was delivered... Jason.

  20. This may or may not be a different matter but this is
    IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR EVERYONE.

NEVER NEVER accept PayPal for anything picked up in person.
Even if you do get that thing straightened out, it doesn't matter- he can still take the car or whatever and then take his entire chunk of money back... and you can't stop it

All he has to say is that you don't have a tracking number, and PayPal automatically finds in his favor. Your money gone and he has a free car.

Credit card payments (thru PayPal you can't tell which payment is a CC payment) are even worse. Even if PayPal does want to help you, the money disappears anyway and PayPal takes their money from YOU.

Only use PayPal for small amounts you can afford to lose, and ONLY accept PayPal when you can have a TRACKING NUMBER for your proof (no picking up in person).

DO NOT LET THE VEHICLE OFF YOUR PROPERTY WITHOUT A SAFE FORM OF PAYMENT. PAYPAL IS NOT A SAFE FORM OF PAYMENT.
HE WILL GET A FREE VEHICLE.

  21. someone's previous post sounded like GOOD ADVICE-

Disconnect your bank account from PayPal right away.
Disconnect your C Card from PayPal right away.
Run, don't walk, to your bank to try to block any transfers.

If the bank can't stop it, I would tally up the checks I still had out and still had to cover, and see if there is a way to take care of the checks you wrote and still keep the account as close to empty as possible.
Try to minimize any bounce fees, but it sounds like you may already have a bunch coming.

See where everything falls before you evaluate the situation and decide on your next step.

Stay in contact with PayPal and listen to their advice, but take it with a grain of salt.

Even if you have used much of the money and can't dig up enough for a refund, you still may have lost it anyway. So you may now be in debt.

Your negative number in the PayPal account is between you and PayPal. It may have been caused 98% by the other guy pulling the money back, and 2% by your hurry to pay other bills, but the negative numbers, and the debt, will be between you and PayPal. In other words, your contract with PayPal will leave YOU in debt to PayPal if you have a neg balance.

If it were me, I wouldn't let the car be picked up until I had the cash or travellers checks, or a pile of postal money orders or something safe. I would use THAT money to square my negative numbers with PayPal and pay off the PayPal debt.

I don't have any advice for what you SHOULD do on this one point--, but I myself would NOT, I MYSELF WOULD NOT allow the other guy, or the other guys bank to PayPal me again to take care of it because it can vanish again next month when he has your car and you have no tracking number to show you delivered it.

I am no legal expert by any means, but I have had to deal with bounced payments, bank transfers gone wrong, fake payments, and people trying to get free items any way they can.

I NEVER accept PayPal for anything I can't afford to lose.

I NEVER accept PayPal for anything I can't PROVE I shipped with a "PayPal recognized" tracking number.

when i sell a car on ebay i get the deposit via pay pal (and i state it is non refundable) and then its COD after that. no cashiers check, no money order, just cash money. its fun to look at a pile of hundreds sitting on my desk in my office after a sale. kinda makes me feel like Scrooge McDuck!!!

Definitely Go to your bank and say you suspect fraud between paypal and a buyer on ebay, they'll stop any further transactions, also call your credit card company as well. After a few days it will be done and active and when the guy sends you the 1800 it will be bounced back, tell him your accounds are frozen due to a fraud investigation and the carrier will need to bring you cash, or he can send you some US postal Money Orders, Cash them at the post office, and only Then........ Release the vehicle..... Good Luck..

you do need to go speak with your bank because paypal can and will pull the money back out of your checking.

PayPal sucks for the buyer too. I had a guy take my money on the sale of an engine, and not ship. I filed a claim with PP, they judged in my favor, and still couldn't get me the money back...WTF? Why would you not put a hold on the $ if it is in dispute?
