What Ford Engine should I use

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Strodder, Mar 21, 2008.

  1. some of the early 58 332 had solid lifters and would kick ****, investigate what you got?? could be good and smaller will do better mileage
last but not least the 428 is a wild motor and if you can find one would be big poser for the $$$ and fit in decent, like bolt in almost

Check out www.speedomotive.com They have a number of stroker kits for the 390 that will work in your 352 if you bore the block out. Budget 417 stroker engine kit is only $1,275.00. Forged 417 kit is $2,200.00. 431 Forged stroker kit $2,300.00 and 445 Forged Stroker kit $2,500.00.
The C-6 will work great and gearvender makes a unit that replaces the tailhousing and makes it an overdrive.

I returned a message to you about issues with installing a C-6 etc...

If you really want to spend money to get HP then thats your choice. I'd get a running 390 in place first then build a hi-output FE if you want one. your wallet is the limit New SOHC kits are over $10,000. Good 428's can be had for about $2500 in useable condition. Heads give you the best bang Aluminum are really good & close to design to Medium risers $1,200 Tri power setup's are just over $1000. Use these prices as just guidelines

Best source here on the HAMB is prob Texoutsider he runs fullbore FE's on the strip. I'll use his advice on my future FE's he was really
helpfull on my questions on headwork.

Also Square birds are complete Unibody so no frame & they weighted 3400# with CI intake & exhaust . Shave weight a little & you've got a 3000# car with 400 HP

  4. Only one motor to use 427 SOHC.
    Nuff' said.

  5. I had a '67 Ford pickup with a 352 engine. IMO was the most useless engine ever made. Almost left me in a hole in Colorado that I thought I was going to have to homestead because it didn't have the power to get out. When I got back to FL I jerked that 352 out and put a junk yard 429 in it. Was almost a bolt in. Used the 429 mounts (holes were already there in the frame) and moved the transmission cross member back about 5" or so. Shortened the driveshaft and changed the front yolk (went from a truck cruise O matic to a car C-6). Was easy and the power difference was indescribable. I went back to that same hole the next summer and gettin' out was a piece of cake .. So there!!

84 T-Bird with a 302 would have had an AOD trans. Won't bolt up to the FE anyway as mentioned.

My vote would be for a good used 390 bolted in (with a 2x4 or 3x2 intake), or a rebuild on the 352.

    cheers

hey i see you guys know your fe engines i have a 63 thunder bird with a 390fe and a cruise-o-matic. i need to get the trany rebuilt it takes a while for it to find 3rd gear, its fine after it warms up. is this somthing i can fix easy or should i have it overhualed

  11. I used to have a '61 T-bird with a 390 and Cruisomatic. It had weird shifting problems too when it was cold. I rebuilt the transmission and it still had problems. I think I remember the fix was to buy a new governor for it. This was like 20 years ago, but I think I remember replacing the governor lying in the gutter with two wheels up on the curb. It only took about 15 minutes. It ran fine after that. The old governor would stick and it wouldn't shift right until it was warmed up. Maybe that's all you need to do on yours, either replace or fix up the old governor. Maybe some actual transmission mechanics can give you more details on this because I can't remember exactly. I just know it was an easy fix.

If your Cruisomatic is still in good shape, a 390 is the easy upgrade to a 352.

I vote for the 352, or a 390. Anyone can drop a later model engine in a car. When I see a newer engine in an old car, I pretty much just walk away. It doesn't peak my intrest at all.

Dude use the 5.0! they last forever, get good gas milage, and can be pumped up pretty good. Or you can sell me the 5.0? lol My 87 tbird cracked the block and it`s toast. If you can look on ebay for a moutaineer or explorer 5.0. those are cobra engines. I see them all the time for 200 bux on ebay. A 5.0 would rule in a old tbird.

This thread is interesting. I have a 63 galaxie, blown up 352 FE went to the junkyard. I don't know what to put in it. I have access to a 302 w/aod, a 400ci sbc w/aod and a rebuilt 351M out of a truck that is STRONG. I am a year or two from having to make a decision. I really don't care what goes in it as long as it is reliable. I still have the farm mentality of whatever works, use it.

  15. Just help drop a 390 s code (the more hp version) froma 74 ranchero gt in a 56 fairlane still working out the kinks but we went for a ride the other day and that thing hauls balls:eek: I've got a 390 in my 64 bird and it moves also...of course the fairlane is much lighter but keep the 352 for a rebuild later on and get yourself a 390 or 428 just keep it Ford.
