Found an Edsel wagon in the bone yard today. I know the '57-'59 Fords had the narrowest 9-inch...I can't remember the width right now, but I know it's the right width for Tri-5 Chevys, First Gen F-bodies, AMX and a couple others. But I don't know if that applies to the Edsels (and their wagon). Does anyone know if the Edsel wagon rear end is the narrow one also found in regular Fords? The yard wants $125 for it, and a buddy of mine is looking for one to put under his '56 Chevy, with as little extra work as possible. (What we're mainly concerned with here is the housing width, as the axles will be replaced, the dif will be rebuilt, and the drum brakes that are on it will be retained) -Brad
Yup. The wagons had the good rearend with the bigger bearings in them, and all the 58-59 Edsel wagons were based on the Ford equivalent and had the same rearend. $125 is a good deal if it's complete.
The 57 - 59 Ford rears are a little over 1 inch more narrow per side than the stock original 55 - 57 Chevrolet rear ends. The 57 - 59 Fords rears measure out @ 57 inches and change. The 55 - 57 Chevy rears are 60 inches wide. The above measurements are measured this way
I have a 58 Edsel wagon rear that I removed from the car myself. It's the same width as the ford; 57 1/4". It has the big axle bearings like all the wagons had. Regular car 57-59 rears are the same width as wagons but have the small wheel bearing.
Thanks guys! I've got a question on the bearings. I pulled another one out of a '58 or '59 Ford, and the tubes don't neck down. Could it have the big bearings? I've seen some 9-inch rears that I ***umed had the small bearings, as the axle tubes visibly necked down. Or did I hit my head once too often? -Brad
Look at the bolts that hold the backing plates on ... the big bearing rears have a good bit larger bolt. Easily to tell ...
I have a 58 Ford wagon rearend with small bearings. I pulled it out from under the car myself 20+ years ago. I ***umed it to be the original rearend in the car at the time. There must be exceptions to the "all wagons had big bearings" rule or else someone swapped a small bearing rearend into this car before I got it....
HA! No, not Colins. But I did call them today and got "country directions." Then I hit Mapquest and got some directions that will actually get me there. I'm heading over tomorrow AM. I owe you a frosty one! Thanks for the pic, Deuce. That made it crystal clear. Looks like I'll be pulling this one out with my buddy this weekend. The car is complete, but pretty far gone. Unobstructed view of the frame rails from toe board to tail gate. P***enger side rear door is solid, and the rear wheel openings are good, but that's it. Even the grille center is bent up. (Always wanted to hang one on the wall, with my '54 Buick dagmars hanging above it ) I'm almost tempted to sawzall the roof off of it--it'd make a sweet filler for an A-sedan roof. -Brad
