I'll be in coming over the pond to New York with the family for a couple of weeks in May, visiting relatives  Anybody got the names of any hot rod stores, or rod/drag type museums, shows, etc going on around that time. I need to buy some stuff, not sure what yet, but I'm sure I can find something. We'll be in Brooklyn, if there is anything going on there? I doubt I'll have any transport, and probably not a lot of time to do car type stuff I searched on the web, Hot Rods New York, but it comes up with trash like male dancers, cafes and art shows and all.
Your coming to the wrong end of the state, most of the good stuff is west (much west) of the Brooklyn
If you are open to additional venues...you might enjoy the re-opened NBC tour at Rockefeller Center over in Manhattan. Go at night and take the elevator to the top. It has an outside walk around deck and views of the city. Pellegrino's in Little Italy was worth it too! We went on a monday and the staff was terrific. http://www.yelp.com/biz/pellegrinos-new-york
I did buy lot of car related books for very reasonable price from Barnes & Nobles when I was in NY year ago. It was cl*** trip, so I didn't do any car related stuff.
Car stuff, not really... As jrblack30 said, ya gotta head farther West in the state for that... BUT... you could do the tourist stuff (interesting, BTW), like walk the Brooklyn bridge, hit Coney Island, wander around Brighton Beach (and learn some Russian, too!), the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is cool, especially if you're a photographer (or have a lady friend with you)... could do the Brooklyn pizza tour (and try real NY pizza), NY Transit Museum, see Flatbush Ave... Definitely hit Manhattan for the sights, though.
Sounds like a shortage of rod orientated stuff in the immediate area Guess we can see the cl***ic sights of NY, stuff our faces with quality pizza, buy some books, and generally make like tourists. We've all seen it in the movies, so lets check it out in real life. I'll do my shopping on line, Summitracing.com maybe, and let the stuff make its own way to me. Our 6 year old has set her heart on seeing Disney World too, in Florida, for a couple of days anyway, and the Don Garlits museum of drag racing is but a stones throw from there, isn't it.......
Coming to the wrong end of the state if you like fields and cows haha. Dude, you are going to be in one of the 5 boroughs. The ONLY place to be in NY...NYC! There is never a shortage of things to do. London is kick***, spent a decent amount of time there, but NYC it surely isnt. Take in the sights, it's a lot safer than you hear.
Also you arent far from NJ, Brooklyn is probably 30 or 40 minutes from me depending how crowded Elizabeth NJ is and Staten Island. The Expressway can ****.
What part of Brooklyn you going to be in? I go to Bay Ridge a lot to visit family. PM me and Ill try to have some cool hot rod/automobile stuff to see.
have you ever been there?lots of history, lots to see, some of the best looking women live there too. whata scared ?
I can't speak for what's in Brooklyn but if you have a car and can get around there are a couple of nice cruise nights out on Long Island. Thurs night in Oakdale and Sat in Deer Park. Both locations can get over 100 cars on a good night. PM me and I can give you the details. If you're in town for May 17th and have a car you could try heading over to the Jalopy Showdown in Pennsylvania. From Brooklyn it would be about a 4 hour run each way. On May 18th the Long Island Street Rod ***ociation has their spring swap meet and car show at Wicks Rd in Commack. This is usually a very nice show with a good turnout of cars (>150) and a mix of swap stuff. When you say you're "right in the middle" are you from around Leicester? My family is originally from Loughborough.
I'm pretty sure there's some rod shops in Lon Giland (Long Island) PM Long Island Vic,maybe he could point you in the right direction.
tourist stuff like the bronx zoo, empire state building, ground zero at the world trade center, nunzi's pontiac in brooklyn.
After the NYC stuff, check out some local cruise nights, hop the bridge to Staten Island,,,,,,,Hylan Blvd,,,,,,,,, hop the next bridge(Gothels) to North Jersey,,,,,,,,or Check this out http://www.njcarshow.com/
the indian Larry legacy is in brooklyn .. if you dont know its indian Larry's old shop Paul co** took it over and still builds bikes there .. there's some cool **** in there
there is not really alot in the way of street rod oriented shops in the area. but there is so much in the city to see and do to keep you busy. if you want to try pizza then you must try grimaldi's pizza in brooklyn under the brooklyn bridge, great pizza probally one of the top 5 in n.y..( expect an hour wait depending on time you go, but its worth it). if you want to try italian pastry you must go to fortunato brother's in williamsburg brooklyn, they are on manhattan ave and devoe street. the best canoli's you will ever have plus other great pastry's. they also serve cappucino, latte's,and, espresso. n.y.c. is so close to brooklyn and there is just so much to take in. a broadway play would be great to see here as well. i have attached a link to a web site of a local special intrest paper that advertizes cars for sale. they have a section on area shows and cruise's. i'am sure you can find something intresting to see while here http://www.specialinterest.com/siv_events.cfm
Check out Lombardi's Harley Davidson on Bay Street in staten Island. Oldest bike shop in the states. Been in the same location since day one. You ain't a biker, till you get one of their t-shirts!
You cant really go wrong with anything you decide to do in NYC. Just tooo much to ever see all of it. IMHO, it may be the one time to forget the automotive scene and just go out and be a tourist. Coney island Nathans Hotdogs Sals Pizza Rays [originl] pizza on Broadway Statue of liberty people [and celebrity] watching @ times square. If your going to disney, you have a fantastic opportunity to see some of the most beautifull parts of America. I-95 down to Philladelphia, see the birthplace of America, and **** down a couple cheese-steak sandwiches @ Pats Continue down I-95, follow signs to Virginia beach, then follow signs to outer banks. See the "graveyard of the atlantic" and all the old shipwrecks. Take the ferry to Ocracoke island, "hideout" of Black-Beard the pirate. Continue down the coastal highways to Savannah Georgia where "Midnight in the garden of good and evil" really happened. [I lived there, Danny Hansford was my neighbor!!!] Continue down coastal highway to Florida, catch the legendary highway 1 thru Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona [lots o car stuff there!], and finally to the space coast and Kennedy space center. From there, head west to Disney. Stay in one of the all-stars resorts [more fun AND cheaper]. Head home up I-75 and see Garlets museum [my uncle grew up with Don. Super nice guy if you get to meet him] Continue up I-75 to Knoxville, and check out Gatlinburgh Tennessee. See the American Indians and the bears, along with the apalachian mountains. Follow the apalachian highway and blue ridge parkway thru the mountains back to Washington DC where you can see the smithsonian air and space museum. And then I-95 back to NYC. JMHO on what's worth seeing

We'll be staying in East 65th Street, wherever that is. I can see it on multimap.com but not sure the name of the area. I think we arrive 16th may, so that sounds possible for a look see. I'm from stafford, in the UK, so not too far from Leicester. I'll check the link, thanks. Thanks for all the info guys. I reckon we could have a busy schedule, with so much interesting stuff to see. I may have to dump the family, steal a car and just go see everything myself
Best food and music at rodeo bar, check out www.rodeobar.com. Very reasonable prices and a cool atmosphere. Then grab a beer and just sit down at an outdoor pub and enjoy. Best place on earth imho.
