anybody know what gears origionally came in the 54 plymouth savoy rear axle? (i've been told 4.11 but don't know)

also does anyone know of a new rear axle that would fit the origional springs in that car so i wouldn't have to weld on new spring perches (i've done this before but would rather do a drop in new axle and then get the driveshaft work done).

the reason i'm asking is because my plymouth (flathead six, 3 speed no overdrive, origional rear end) tops out at about 55-60 on the freeway. i want to get more out of it on the freeway and do away with those mopar rear drums that are difficult to work on. any suggestions would be welcomed.

I am going to do the same thing on my '53 wagon, and my '54 Chrysler too. Go with early-mid '70's mopar rear ends. Say like Dodge Demon, Dart, etc. That is what I am going to do. Just my .02 KNUX!

those are supposed to bolt up to the stock springs? or will i have to weld in some new perches?

thanks for the info, make sure to post some pics when you're going through the swap. it'll help me out immensely and us mopar guys gotta stick together.

From what I've heard and read they should be a bolt in replacement. But I'm sure you've heard this suggestion but you could also do a T5 swap in the future. I'm in the middle of that myself and all is fairly straight forward. If you want any info on that let me know.

yeah i saw don coatney do a t-5 swap on his on another board. it looked hard to me but doable. i also saw a kit for the swap on langdon's stovebolt but he said it was only for trucks.

i guess i can measure the spring width and track width to find a rear that would bolt in. anyone have those measurements by the way. i can get them but my car is at my shop 30 minutes away from me.
