I needed a grill for the chevy. I really wanted a 34 ford grill. Not only are they way expensive, but they are also a big grill. I figured I would buy a rough one and cut it up. After a lil searchin i turned up a good candidate. It was straight but very rusty, and the teeth were all rotten. When I was about to lay the saw to it I decided to give building one from scratch a try. Once built I cut down my new grill and used some sxpanded metal in it to give it that chevy look.
I hope you all like it.

  2. Jim that is amazing - any chance you shot pics while you were fabbing? Would make a great tech thread.

SLICK! What did you use to form the sides if you don't mind me asking? Like hemisteve said, I'd LOVE to see a tech on that!

hey jim , that came out sweet as with the rest of the chevy,my 34 ply grill was trashed on a few bars where the emblem was and on the bottom of a few more , i cut a bad bar out and my sheet metal shop made me up some extra ones that were spot on, a few sm piecuts on the bends and i had replacements, really forfilling to save the piece and not have search for another which would of been way over any budget i could muster, painted the insert flat black and good to go, more pics of that chevy would be cool

Looks good Jim! I am going to build my own one off grill shell for my 38 Ford truck. I hate the stock grill with a p***ion.
Did you just tip all your edges or did you make a hammerform to shape them? It is hard to tell in the pics.

I too would be interested in how you formed this...the grille looks great with the expanded metal...but to me it is still too tall...looks like it is higher than the cowl line.

It isnt taller than the cowl. In the pic it is just leaned up for effect. I still need to make mounts and finish out the rough edges of the shell.

I guess years of building gives you "the eye". It also gives you "the scars", the cough, and the "lack of money". Just kidding. Thanks for the compliment.
