I personally think heavy tanks are retarded as gassers, gasser wannabes or what the hell ever that fad is now. Just because someone built one back when doesn't make it cool.

I love your idea, to me, one of the keys to success in this hobby is creating something that stands out from the crowd. Look back at the 60s, guys made gassers out of whatever they could find and afford, some were real funny looking but they were unique in their own way. I've always felt that some of us create works of art when we build cars, sounds to me that you have the beginning of just that.:D Good luck!

Dare to be different. Just build it as you see fit. In the mid 60's I had a buddy build
a 37 Packard cp. with a 430 Linclon engine, ran it in 'C' gas class, it was a screamer.
Not allways a winner , but allways inpressive.

I'm sure guys like George Barris were told not to modify or customize certain cars as well. Aren't we glad he didn't listen?

    You have 2 choices:
    1. the Packard or
    2. A gasser

The two don't go together. The Packard is too heavy to look like a legitimate gasser. If you like the Packard (the old bird-in-the-hand deal) then it needs to be a custom.

Packard just screams CUSTOM. Even if it's not as nice, I'd urge you to keep looking for another body more fitting the gasser mentality.

Hey, I got a great idea...

I found this sweet rust free school bus. Should I gasser it? I mean, it's already got a straight axle and radiused wheel wells. I have this sweet 305 2 bbl motor that I snagged out of my grandma's 83 Caprice, it'll look tough with some finned aluminum valve covers. I wanna jack it up, and put fenderwell headers, and sticker the windows up with decals of vintage speed equipment I don't have and old dragstrips I've never been to.

    So whaddaya think? Cool?

there is a real difference between cool different and not cool different.Thats the fine line that makes or brakes any artistic endevore. My thinking is use the money you have and take the time to find a rad gasser body. You'll know when you find it , you won't have to ask for opinions.

If you really want a gasser, I think you could find a car that'd be better suited for it. Like was previously stated, it's your car, do what you want....but since I own a 55 Packard I know how freaking heavy they are! Even if you gutted the car, and removed all the brightwork, it'd still be over 2500#. Not to mention the huge engine you'd need to get it moving. My opinion would be to make a cruiser or custom out of it. You'd be the only one on the block, and people would wonder what the hell you're driving!

  18. Best reply ever! lol!

Why does everyone keep saying NOT to do it because its a big ole heavy car? Look at that pic of the original Flintstone Flyer and what do you see....a big ole heavy car sitting next to another big ole heavy car! Did it stop those guys? NO! Granted, yes this thing is 3800 pounds as compared to a 3500 pound nomad but A/gas wasnt the only class you could run in back then. Weight is a "problem" that can be solved. Its got the same basic body design as everything else in 55...slab sided with a GM top! I dig it though man, with no front bumper itd look mean as hell. As far as reworking all the suspension goes hows it gonna be any different than yanking everything out from under a tri-year Chevy and welding up some Ford van shit to put under the front and a 9in out back! Come on guys. Not EVERY gasser/early drag car was a 55 Chevy.

  19. One more pic. of the FLINTSTONE FLYER.
Check out the cool header collector box. Bob

  22. It's been done. Tom Daniel's "S'Cool Bus".

  23. The Clipper has the same wheelbase as a 55-56 Pontiac or Olds, as well as a comparable curb weight, and there were quite a few Olds and Poncho gassers. I did a quickie photochop using a picture of a 56 Olds gasser, pretty much the same as far as basic shape goes, just added the Clipper features. I think it kicks ass, and I say go for it. More unique than yet another Chevy gasser, and the Clippers don't hold as much value as the tri-5 Chevys, or even the bigger Packards, so you won't feel so bad cutting it up. What the fuck, that's what I say.

I think it looks too cool stock to gasserize it but if you make it reversible I guess it might be cool.
