Ive been trying to find some information on the DEQ laws.
In Oregon, vehicles made from 1975 and on have to go through DEQ every two years. Any vehicle made on or before 1974 never has to go through.

My question is, will this rule ever change, or has it already been grandfathered in since there was no emission controls before 1975? (trust me, I dont WANT it to change, Im just curious and asking.)

Thats what Ive been told, but Id like to read it for myself. You know how hard state websites are to navigate. Tried SEMA, but couldnt find anything.

So, does anyone have facts as to if the pre '74 non-DEQ will stand forever due to a grandfather rule, or whatever they call it. In Oregon or any other state?

I know not every city has DEQ laws, and maybe some states dont have it at all, but Im sick of messing with them.

I have a beautiful '79 chev PU that I take great care of and runs like a dream, but its always a F'n hassle every two years with DEQ.
I dont want to sell it just cause of DEQ, but Im really thinking about getting a early 60's truck/wagon now. Ive had the truck for 8 years and its hard to imagine letting it go just because of DEQ.

Im bummed about it, but the only other thing to do is move out of the city limits, and Im not doing that right now.

Thanks for any advice, opinions or links to websites:)

Department of Environmental Quality. A place youre forced to go every two years if your vehicle is 1975 or newer. They stick probes up your exhaust tips and check for smoke, noise, unburnt fuel, cataletic covernters, emission control junk.

They look over your whole car and run mirrors under the car. Once you pass, you pay $21, you get a slip that you take to the DMV. Turn over the slip and pay for little stickers for your licence plates. Then do it all over in two years.

Are you telling me they dont have anything like this in Cali???

Yeah, they do, but I don't think it's called DEQ.
We don't have smog regs in Iowa, but I can see it coming somewhere up the line.

As far as yours there in Oregon, what you stated may be the case, but they are always subject to change by your "elected representatives". Usually it's a money grab for more income for the state. Good luck....the west coast is rampant with this crap, and it seems they are going after older cars, too.

Well don't give up hope on the laws changing.

Oklahoma had inspections for about 10 or 15 yrs then one day the whole thing got thrown out. Hope it never comes back!

I have lived in Oregon for 18 years and have never had to take a vehicle to be inspected. Are you sure this isn't a local law?

  9. Never heard of the term DEQ. In California we just call them "smog checks". It's a big pain and a big ripoff.

A smog check is a smog check no matter what the name. It's just that in Oregon the state has a bureaucracy that builds and operates the facilities instead of farming out (and sharing some of the take) the actual testing to private shops willing to pony up the scratch for all the equipment the state deems necessary to participate. Also, it's not yet state wide (but it's coming), and runs more or less north to south along the entire I-5 corridor, anchored to the larger cities, particularly the three county Portland Metropolitan area (understandable with all the liberal fruits and nuts that have completely taken over the place in the last 25-30 years).

I think it's in the Portland area as well as The Medford/Grant's Pass area so far, but could be coming to a city near you.You never know what they are to till it's to late most of the time.Hot Rodders have been pretty lucky here in getting some related laws passed, i.e. no fenders, YOM license plates & blue dots, that I know of & I worked on two of them myself.
