I am trying to find some info for a friend who has a 54 chev pick-up.He is looking at selling the original rearend from it. I know that the truck was originally a automatic rig. What we are wondering is what the rear end is worth.

Can't help you on what it is worth but a little info. In 1954 auto transmission was an option , I have only seen a few , it was a 4 speed hydramatic. I believe the torque tube is abit shorter and if you have the shift linkage it is rare. Try www.stovebolt.com those guys are alot more knowledgable than I on that site. Hope that helps.

  4. And the late 54 had an open driveline instead of a torque tube....which one does he have, open or enclosed (torque tube)

55 1st series half tons were the 1st with an open driveline. Larger trucks had them earlier IIRC.

'54 Chev trucks did indeed have the Hydramatic as an option. GMC offered them as early as 1952, but only in the "route van" ... the standard gear ratio for the '54 up Chev or GMC 1/2 ton pickups is 3.90 regardless of which trans it had new, so it's not much of a highway setup. Torque tube length same as manual trans. Value is whatever someone who needs one will pay.

  7. You got me on that one...My late '54 must have been a 55 1st series because it was open driveline but looked exactly like a 54 (except for the side emblems) I wonder why it was ***led as a 1954 Chevrolet 1/2 t PU?

Some states ***led vehicles by the year it was sold, not necessarily the actual model year.

The rear end itself is nothing special. The Hydra_Matic torque tube driveshaft was shorter than the manual trans version. Chev and GMC use different linkage. Some of the other things that are special about the hydra-matic truck are push****on above the light switch for solenoid start instead of foot stomper, a neutral start swith, the trans cover is different due to bellhousing access, the frame crossmembers and brake line routing is different as crossmembers are heavier and unboltable so trans can be removed from under the truck. Carb has auto choke and there is no choke cable. Even the throttlre linkage on the side of block uses different pivot point and throttle return spring location than manual transmission trucks. If you are getting rid of the transmission, I would like to pick up a spare sometime, The differences between the 54 and 55 1st series trucks was pretty much the open driveshaft in the 55 1st and the mentioned hood side emblems.

I agree with oldcarfart. I have been trying to give away three torque tube rear ends for a while and have had no luck....

Where is it at? The driveshaft length is different for hydra-matic and if it's going for s****, I am up for adding to spare parts collection if I can find a way to get it home.
