    Like a Pornstar..

I know i'm new, havent posted a whole lot yet, but just wanted ya'll to know Murfy's law is still in effect. Was working on my late grandfather's 72 Coupe DeVille while waiting for parts for the 54 to come in and was grinding a peice smooth while wearing sunglasses (Yea, i know) and had a Piece of steel hit me right in the left eye.. came underneath the bottom of the glasses and smacked my cornea pretty hard..

Stupid me decided against the Saftey goggles 15 ft away because it was really sunny and i didnt have to grind on it much... bad thing is, Me and my wife both got laid off over the last month at our jobs... so no insurance..

Do me a favor and wear the damn goggles. Ill get some pics up this evening... my wife keeps calling me cyclops ;)

Even better wear a face shield.

  3. Everyone's done it.....

    Oh, it won't take long!

So, how long to heal up after you take the short cut to save a minute or two?

ALWAYS wear your safety gear (glasses, goggles, gloves...even ear plugs...if the hazards are there. Heck, I wear safety glasses while I MOW!

Yep, I'll second the face shield. Stuff still bounces around the glasses.

I wear goggles and a shield, plus a charcoal respirator...you'd be amazed at the shit that DOESN'T come out of your lungs after a long day of grinding when you have a filter...

It's like Saftey Glasses Shock Story one of my shop teashers told me once about the "guy he knew" that lost an eye tuning a carburator.

Leaned over the running engine with a screw driver in hand. Droped the screw driver into the fan and it kicked back up and stabbed him in the eye.

That story makes me wanna wear saftey glasses just taking a sh*t.

I was blowing off a lathe once while wearing a face shield. I needle of aluminum came around the shield and stabbed right into my eye! The other guys taped a big-gulp cup to my eye to protect it and took my to the emergency room. Ow.
I couldn't drive in bright light for a couple of weeks without very dark sunglasses on.

  10. sure makes a guy feel stupid when this stuff happens! had to have wire from wire wheel removed from my eye and the way they find it is when it RUSTS then they take a sizeable needle and remove it. wise a guy right up!

you can never be too carefull when it comes to your eyes. i've been guilty of doint "just a little" grinding without protection. usualy a piece of metal hittin me in the face reminds me why i have a dozen pair of safety glasses scattered about the shop. i'm blessed with better than perfect vision and i'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible... even wearing safety glasses i manage to get metal in my eye at least 2 or 3 times a year. goggles are not a bad idea but i can't seem to keep them from foggin up when i'm bustin ass and gettin sweaty in the garage. a face shield is not a bad idea either. need a new screen for mine...

another note on this subject. i always wear my safety glasses UNDER my welding helmet too. i don't know how many times i've had a hot spark get up inside the helmet. those little foam ear plugs are a good idea when welding too. not just for noise. ever get a hot spark inside your ear??? sucks MAJOR ass let me tell you!!!

had the wife call the eye specialist of the golf course ( I always told him that game was for yuppie wimp's) he was pretty ticked off about comming to the E.R. for some grease monkey who knew better, he beat the heck out of my eye with that die grinder thing !
He told me if I didn't keep my freak'in head still while he was grinding away ,,,he would make sure I was blind in that eye!,,,,,,,I still tell him "golf sucks".....But

I put safety glasses on even if I roll under the car for a inspection

    That sucks...

But I don't know what the real solution is for me.

I wear glasses... Can't see without them...

I'm also generally very concerned about safety. So I have a pair of goggles that fit over my glasses as well as a full face shield...

I gotta say that the only times I've ever had anything hit me in the eye was while wearing the goggles or the shield.

I don't have the slightest idea how it happened with the goggles... It must have come through one of the air holes. I wear them good and tight.

Everytime I wear the face shield something comes up behind it and gets me...

So I pretty much just wear my glasses and don't have a problem. I've tried the face shield a couple of different times and got scared by how much stuff was getting close so I've given up on that.

I've tried the goggles twice since that first angry sliver and it's happened both times.

One possible explanation is that the goggles fog up so I have to get closer to what I'm doing to see??

What's worked best for you 4-eyed guys?

Things still get around face shields. Kinda hard to get around goggles since they pretty much seal to your skin. ;)

I was using a impact gun laying under my truck to take off the muffler.. spun the nut round and a piece of pointed metal imbeded itself right in the center of my pupil. I could feel it on my eye lid scratching but could not see it. Soo me being accustomed to doing my own surgury i decide I can remove it.

    Step 1 .......

Get a brand new utility knife blade and with skill try to catch an edge of the metal frag and pull it out [ and i mean skill i did not go digging away in my eye]
No luck with that so i started thinking of step 2..

    Step 2...

Use a magnet on my eye in hope that pill pull out the offending splinter..

    No luck...

Step 3 , go to the Dr ...

I had my head put in a clamp and the Dr used a slow motion drill to coax out the offending splinter.. I had to keep still and look directly into the drill as it came forward and not blink or move my eyeballs in any way , just stare in one spot. He got it out and I told him what I had done to try to remove it. He said the magnet was a great idea , the razor blade , not so much..

    Wear eye protection!!!

we have a magnet in our first aid cabinet for when you get metal in your eye, its the length of a pencil and has a dull smooth point on one side and a loop on the other, its worked 3 times for me.
2 times things flying around get behind the glasses 1 time under a car and the shavings fell from vibration so now i always wear them when under a car.

    this is the magenet
