We do the Moth balls in paper cups and lots of dryer sheets. We also keep traps in and check them every week. some years that doesen't even work.JIm
the strongest mothballs you can get and make sure to aluminum foil with duct tape over any openings, especially exhaust pipes. I store my cars in a barn with all kinds of critters roaming around, oppossum, ra****s, mice, etc for 6 months, so far no problems.
if you do the moth ball thing..wear protection handeling them and do not breath the dust or just wear a resperator ..they are toxic
I used to have rodent problems myself. I asked my neighbor if he had any suggestions. He said get a couple of free cats, and don't feed them. He said they would start mousing. I asked how I would keep them around if I did not feed them. His response: "thats why you get free cats". I feed mine, and have not had a rodent problem since. Its been 5 years.
There was a post on here awhile back about the hazards of mothball, nasty stuff. In the past I have used plenty of D-Con packets & blood meal (farm supply store) and it worked well, even got rid of the woodchucks under the shed.
I use dryer sheets. Don't like the moth ball smell. Then when you bring it out in the spring it smells like it just came out of the wash.
The better ultrasonic pest repellers seem to work. The cheap ones don't.Expect to pay around $35.00 for one that works.I got mine at Home Depot. Steve (V7)
my neighbors have a BAD roach problem. Ive found them in my garage and even saw one in my 59. Any advice for that??
i work in bakeries and the pest control guy gave me some stuff that you would swear was edible, peanut ****er like substance packed with poison and it works killer. also works great with just a tiny bit in a trap. parents used to sell feed and we had these metal boxes that had wind up devices that turned sharp blades and ground those little ****ers up good and we used peanut ****er, seems they just can't resist it. snakes work great also!
They used to swarm in the ashtrays of almost every car I owned, can't really remember where they all went.
We're trying! Looking at 4 houses today actually. I watched the lady across the alley dump a trash can and 5 minutes later 100s of roaches made a bee line for my open garage. I'm not exaggerating either. I used an entire extra large can of carb cleaner wiping them out. That was just the one day I witnessed it, too. She used to dump them in my cans until I locked them up. ****ing sick. I put out a bunch of bait/motels, but I dont know if it worked or not. That poor kid that lives there is a really great kid, too.
Bay leaves (Yes the kind you cook with). For some wierd reason they can't stand them. OR mix sugar and baking soda together. They eat it because of the sugar and the baking soda kills them. It's not an instant remedy but is safer than poison.
For the roaches, go to the hardware store or a farm store, and ask for something called "Super Hi-Kill" insect killer. It comes in a little brown bottle, and you dilute it with water. NASTY stuff. In Florida, I lived in a wood-frame apartment building, which was full of roaches, termites and ants. Then, when a stray cat adopted me, it became infested with flees. I tried everything to get rid of the flees, and nothing at all worked. The Super Hi-Kill lived up to it's name. I went out of town for the weekend, put the cat at the Vet, and nuked the apartment. It killed everything living in there, including a very robust ficus tree. Later, when I had a house, the ants would stream in every spring, then again in the fall. I sprayed the OUTSIDE of the house, around the perimeter of the entire building, and it kept all the bugs out--spiders, roaches, and especially ants. I swear by the stuff. However, it'll hurt you in a closed room! At the apartment, when I was done with it, I gave the Super a left-over half gallon of it to nuke an apartment he was cleaning out. While he was cleaning the bathroom, he left the open container in there, and woke up on the floor some time later, crawled across the complex to his building, crawled up the steps, and waited for the ambulance...and spent three days and two nights in the hospital. Spray the perimeter or your garage with the stuff, especially at the doorways, spray the garbage can area, and the garbage cans. See if that helps. For mice...best thing in the world to fight them is a cat. Get a female--they don't mark their territory. And get it fixed, or you'll end up with several before you know it. We've got three outside cats now, and live on a wooded 1-acre lot, with an empty 1 acre lot next to us, and a neighbor on the other side. We don't have a single mouse, mole, rat or chipmunk anywhere to be seen, and the squirrels leave our bird feeders alone too. It's like Marlin Perkin's Mutual of Omaha out here, with the cats stalking whatever game they see. Come to think of it, we've also seen a cat-killed snakes, too. 'possums and ra****s? I had one living under the shed in Florida--don't know what it was, just saw that it would dig through the gravel and get under the floor. Tried poison, gasoline (hoping the smell would get them out) firecrackers. Nothing worked. Finally, I went out and pissed on the entrance hole. He decided I was king of the jungle and moved on. -Brad
Watch out for the Hantavirus. Mice are filthy. We have several new cars that came in at work with all sorts of mice induced wire damage that must have happened during shipping or storage and its a mess. Ive also had people bring their cars into my work to get wires repaired from mice chewing on them , one lady said she got a few of the self defense peper spray cans and sprayed it all over her wheels and tires where she parks the car.
The Bay Leaves are also good for Moths. My wife puts them in the bags of her fiber and it has worked a charm. I've got little potpouri sack of stinky bathroom stuff under each of my seats and in the trunk. No mice issues and I live on a farm that gets swarmed. Chickens eat mice, too. And then you can eat the chickens!
Chickens eat mice, too. And then you can eat the chickens![/quote] well thats just ****in' yummy..Dan Remind me not to buy my whole chikens from you
I don't think the geckos could hack the weather here. It will finally hit 70 around June, then be miserably hot until September, then back into the 50s and on down to negative double digits in the middle of winter. Bay leaves sound like a good option that won't hurt the car (or me). I'll start off mild. We're packing to move, so I'm going to have to inspect every freaking box in the garage so I don't take any of the *******s with me
Chickens, Geckos, sugar, this is funny stuff. I got 2 barn cats, and feed them enough to stick around. Works great.
