$50 and she followed me home.... It think it's 324. It's got aluminum pop-up pistons and a roller cam.

Don't know much else about it, it's my first Olds.

I'd like to build it, I think.

We took a mic to it, and it looks like the bore is at 3.938 and the stroke (if measured correctly is 3.92!

    I'm way more than stoked!

If your measurements are correct and my math is right (bore x bore x stroke x.7854 x # cylinders) it works out to be 382 cu. in. motor (381.96). Cool find!

    That's incredible!

  8. Standard bore; 3.8750 (must be .060 over)
    Standard stroke; 3.437
    394 was 4.125 bore x 3.688 stroke
    May be an after-market crank?
    Awesome find! Get any heads?

50.00 bucks you can't go wrong. I am always leary of any motor that is tore down , and the owner has no knowledge of how it got that way. It has some really cool parts. Give it a good once over. Really cool motor.

Try (bore x pi) x stroke x # of cylinders.

High compression pistons, Howard rods, roller lifters, probably means a wicked cam.
Best fifty bucks you'll ever spend.
Did you just get the short block or were there other parts with it?

Just the short block as you see it, and the crank and waterpump pulley. The guy I got it from said the previous owner of his house restored old Corvettes, so maybe that's why it was left behind?

I'm going to start collecting parts to put it together, need to find good heads I can port, I've read that the '56 heads are the best for this family of engines, the ****** related stuff, and the valve train, I think these year engines used 1.8 rocker arms?

I think I just became an Olds guy, too.

Actually, that would give you the cir***ference of the bore x stroke x # of cylinders which isnt correct.
To get the area of the cylinder you would need: Pi x cylinder radius squared x stroke,
Then multiply by the # of cylinders...Which equals 380.98 Cubic Inches!
