I was in the middle of the drop axle install and was at a friends shop, his dad was there and said "Hey if you need anything for that ol *** truck just go down to Bobes." I said where is that, he laughed and said "Aren't you the cop? shouldn't you know." Well after dying laughing about that he told me where to go and lets just say its been 3 days of hell with the gates being locked, Thursday I didn't make it in time, Friday they are closed till Monday. Well I stopped by and snapped some photos to show my new find!!! Im excited and hopefully I can get the 49 done soon, and then I can justify to my wife why I'm going to try and buy the 29 A Tudor!!! I have yet to meet the owner of this place but he has an old run down lil shop area and about 6 fenced in lots downtown with STUFF EVERYWHERE!!! This is my excitement of the year!! I cant identify all of the cars, if you see one you know for sure post it. Thanks and if you see something you would REALLY like, PM me and Ill see what this guys plans are with all of these and if he would part with them PoPo

what is the number 6 car? that was one of my main questions. And Im hoping to get in there next week, im going to get a list of all the complete cars and stuff. Ill repost everything I find out. and I know, our city tries to clean up everything, He does have some tall fences. A lot of the pictures are me holding my camera over the fence and blindly snapping photos, thats why the trees are covering in a few photos.
...that stuff belongs to a guy named Bobe (pronounced bo-bee), he's been collectin stuff probly all his life, still does. Can't hardly go to any swapmeet or auction that he's not there. He knows his stuff so you won't "steal" anything but he does sell all the time. ...Let us know how his prices are and how this turns out for you. ...I'm sure the city of Davenport "loves" this guy but he's been there forever, so they can't touch him. I haven't been there for many years, but it's a cool place to visit for sure.
Here in Charlotte NC there used to be a treasure trove of neat cars to be found in the more " dangerous" areas of the city.Problem was that you about needed to be a cop, preferably with back up, to safely check out the stuff .Good luck in your quest for old iron! Steve (V7)
Hi Po Po you have indeed found a diamond in the rough!!!!! great pics man Keep us posted!!! LATER 52 csb
I just saw Bobe at the CR swap meet today. He has a knack of always finding the good stuff. A few years ago I watched him buy a pair of 34 Ford rear fenders for practically nothing from a guy who thought they were for a Chevy. My brother got a tour of his place 15 or so years ago while buying some 32 roadster parts and the things he described would blow your mind.
thats what Im excited about. I want to meet this guy, tell him my interests and see what he can show me. I dont have stacks of cash to work with here "so this could be the beginning of a long friendship" and V7 I know what you mean, I took my wife when I went to get pictures, everytime I got out of the car she locked the door. I was like babe, Im right here. and she said "and they are right there, ready to steal the car with me in it, HURRY UP" lol too funny you said that. Corn Fed, what swap meet, wish I would have known about a meet. I am the only one of my really close friends who arent into speeding around with the fastest car possible so swap meets arent something I have listed on my fridge. let me know if there are any others coming up, I'd love to go and there are some things im in the market for. I dont think any neighbors can complain about his stuff, because it looks like he almost owns the whole damn block of property, its sporadic but fences are tall and parts are EVERYWHERE. this is just killing me that I have to wait till Monday now. oh well. Off to work for the night, Ill be back at 7 Am. and yes Im going to drive by tonight with my spot light if I get bored!!!

there is the trim I NEED on that 1949/50 chevy - most post of trim needed http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=256101&highlight=1949 Can you get me a number to call ... I must get that belt line trim!!!
About 15 years ago, a friend of mine bought a similar yard with the full intent of running it as a parts yard for the hobbyist and shade-tree mechanic....Within 5 years another much bigger yard owner ' made him an offer he couldn't refuse' to sell him ALL the cars to help him fill a large container ship headed for the Far East and a few months later, it was all gone. While the EPA is seemingly doing all they can to put the yards out of business, it's the world-wide need for #1 steel that's really closing down our favorite hunting grounds.
...Bobe most likely bought that Model A body at a swapmeet or an auction and it was labeled before he got it. He's well known in this area and he knows his stuff....most likely he doesn't need anything "marked".
Ill get the number again and post it. Im going down there this week and Ill see what he all has and NO WAY am i wearing my uniform. I dont want him thinking I am trying to shut him down or anything, If anything I say lets knock down the buildings, and make him a bigger lot, maybe even the whole BLOCK with a drive thru for parts and an ATM on site!!! Organized chaos that would be!!!! I'd love it. I tried calling his phone before but no one answered, If the same happens then ill just get prices for certain items that people desire and try and hook you guys up nicely!!!! loving life right now guys!
LUCKY YOU AND THE WIFEE WERE NOT ACCUSED OF TRESSP*** WItH INTENT.. hope ya can get to know the guy looks like he's almost ready for the "big day"... "i am tired of this let it go to the s****per" when ready the old signs would be of interest to me .. my yard is starting to look like that and i'm getting grumpier and grumpier..go figure must be the" wherz that--- now mentality. p.s. you beinga city official and not knowing about this place is a good thing kinda!!!
Be sure you get his permission to post his Phone number or address on the internet. I'd be pissed if someone posted mine without first asking.
i used to live 25 miles from davenport, anb bobes was one of our regular stops. he knew what his stuff was worth. riverrat
corn fed. that was my thought too so I was going to wait till I chatted with him either today or tomorrow. matters what time I wake up. Its lunch time now so.. maybe 2 or 3 PM. lol
Holy **** Batman!!! THAT is in Davenport! I remember No. 6 from when I was a kid. It was a '37 or '38 Ford Coupe with flathead power and was built and raced by Sid Snell from Viola, IL. back in the late 50's early 60's. before he switched to a Y-block powered '56 Ford. He sold it to one of the Mack boys from Viola and it sat beside his folk's barn for several years and then disappearred. We always ***umed it got cut up for s****. I have to call his kid.
Yes folks, Bobe knows his stuff. And doesn't appreciate just "chatting" with kids. I wouldn't think you can make him your new best friend, but go ahead and try. Worst he can do is ask you to leave. Be aware he knows what every part at every swap meet is, and what it's worth in today's market. You will NOT be getting any screaming deals out of that place. But, if you need something (and I mean anything), Bobe probably has it. Bring a fat wallet.
Talked to the son of the No. 6's builder, he knew the car was there. He's a member here maybe he'll post some pics of it in it's racing days. Old Sid was a pretty cool guy he would have fit right in here. The guy was a walking encyclopedia of Flathead, Y-block and FE info. He's been gone for years but you walk in his garage and you can still smell his pipe like he was there yesterday. Too bad his car will sit there and rot..........
