What have you guys done for engine swaps in a 1954 ford car? What problems did you encounter? Whats the best source for parts? I am starting to do my research since my 239 y block died this morning going to work!!!!

    Go with a 292 or 312 Y-block.

Your best options: SBC with a Chevy II oil pan, SBF with a front sump, a better Y block like a 292 or 312, an FE like a 352, 390 or a bad*** 410 Merc or 427. You need a front sump to properly fit the ch***is.

We tried a 472 caddy, and it fit like a horse's ***. Big block Mopar would be the same headache. These mid 50's Fords are hard because the upper control arms come in tight and really narrow up the engine compartment. My vote is to stick with either a Y Block or keep it simple with a SBC or SBF

Nothing better than a big inch FE for a swap like this.

If its a daily (as you were driving it to work) Id say 302. Parts availability is adequate and almost anywhere, and the swap would be pretty easy going from Y to front sump SBF.

The 53 and 54 fords have different front crossmembers,,

A front sump oil pan is a must on 54's,, HRP

My '54 wagon had a built FE with a toploader. Had to build the engine to get all that steel moving....:D

It would probably be cheaper to do a Windsor engine than a Cleveland.... I saw one with a 400M so I guess it would be feasible.

The reason in using a front sump pan in the 54 Ford is the original steering linkage is behind the crossmember,,,,

    I used a 302 engine and 5 speed ****** from a 84 mustang in the wagon. HRP

There are factory motor mounts that will bolt in a 302. That may be the least expensive way to go.
