thinking about getting a new exhaust would straigght pipes on a 200 i6 sound good?.. or should i stick with a muffler???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNySihOZ8IM&feature=related dont know if those are straight duals but that sound like ****ttt
Ive heard that small true dual exhaust on stovebolt 235's sound excellent. I dont remember what size though. Pretty small.
A strait 6 under load @ high RPM sounds very different than a V8. It's up to you whether or not it sounds good. I don't think I would run strait pipes on a falcon regardless.
My daughter ran a straght pipe on her 170 6cyl '62 Falcon for a couple years. She just sold it & one of the selling features to the guy who bought it was how cool it sounded. I was against it but she had to have it, So i did it & to my surprise it sounded really Cool for a lil car like that. It was a Stock manifold & single Pipe all the way out. Sounds Good till ya lose a Gasket, Then popped so we always knew when to fix the Flange gasket. I dunno about Duals though.. I had Duals & Mufflers on a 225 Dodge 6 that sounded REALLY good... Then i straight piped it and it sounded like **** !! REALLY Loud & everyone said it sounded like an old Bi~Plane....ONLY LOUDER !! I hated the Dodge Slant on straight Pipes... But the Falcon sounded good .
I run 2" dual's with a split manifold and SHORT stainless packs on my 235..the muffler body is only about 9-10" long and they are mounted as far forward as possible...I love the sound.. Rumbles like a small 8 at idle then has a nice toned low 'buzz' at speed.. It's loud enough that it can be heard but not obnoxious.
Tried this and gl***pack combinations on my Comet with 200 i6, I was disappointed. Maybe with headers it would be cool, but without it sounded like what it was: a small 6 without a muffler.
I ran a dual exhaust on my ford 223 inliner and I thought it sounded good. I did put mufflers on it later as it was hard to sneak into the house at 4 am. without them.
I think it depends on tube diameter, length and what have ya. I'm running a 22" gl***pack with 2 1/4" pipe on Ford 250 inline all the way out the back and it has a drone at certain speeds/rpms, but sounds good at top-end. Going with a 2" pipe next time.
straight pipes on a small ford six sound absolutely SICK! and by sick i mean good. when you split the manifold on these, you get a 2/4 split, so it raps like nothing else out there. when i did mine, i was infleuenced by a certain slant 6 with straight pipes, as well as the old chevy bombs running straight pipes, neither sound as good as a split ford six.
I'm running a single exhaust , with 2" tubing and a single 'Cherrybomb' muffler on my stock '51 216ci and it sounds fairly deep and cool. Cooter
Before my motor swap, I ran an open pipe on my 223 six. It sounded pretty cool for a six. This Chevy 235 sounds really nice for a six. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZVEeLG8eI4
I had a 250 ci Ford in a Falcon with a Cliffy dual outlet header and Heartthrob brand turbo style gl***pack mufflers (JC Whitney) and meg's tips.... It sounded awesome for a six cylinder.... Everyone thought it had a hot 289 in it... Funniest part was when I swapped to a V8 with the stock exhaust it sounded like ****! Good setup for a 6 though.
If you do a search for this you'll get alot of info. Here's some I found. I had a 170 in a Falcon that I kept the stock manifold and ran only a single Flowmaster with 2" pipes, sounded deep and throaty with a hint of "rap" at full throttle. Now I've got a split manifold on a Chevy 250 going into 1.75" pipes, one straight through and one Brockman Steel pack. Sounds rowdy and has that "rap" unique to sixes with duals. Sounds like a Biplane on the freeway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168439&highlight=split+exhaust http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=194749 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59126&highlight=straight+pipes+gl***packs
[QUOTE Yeah, that V8=good sound, 6=sound not so good.[/QUOTE] To each his own...a split six is music to my ears!
yea nice... i have an exhaust cutout right behind the header and it sound like a plane at idle... but on the throttle it sounds mean.. already have the header on there so seems like im going to split it and run duals and dump right before the rear axel or run em all the way back
so i should be running a 1 1/2 pipe i think its a 2 or 2.5 now but the cutout is never capped anyways... but no backpressure so tis bad!
The smaller diameter pipes will be better when you split it into two. If you run em all the way to the back of the car the longer pipes will give you some back pressure and the noise won't make you prematurely deaf! If you do dump the exhaust before the rear axle make sure you point the tips out the side of the car or else the resonating will kill you. I've got mine running all the way to the back under the axle.
Glad your still not thinkin about takin the paint off , playing around with your pipes is alot better idea .....
Id worry about making your car less ****py before you make it even ****pier..you know, balance it out a little bit
My 170 is a plus .030 motor with a solid lifter cam and Clifford split header with duals . But it sounds real good ,not you standard run of the mill I6 . I like it. G***erman
