O/T Canadian bike parts suppliers? Anyone?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Big A, Jun 16, 2004.

  1. Yeah, off-topic, but I know there are a lot of bicycle guys on here, so I'm asking...

I want to customize my cruiser bike (it's a new-ish Raleigh Transit, nothing special). I bought a set of 1/2 moon handle bars for it, and want a set of springer forks and some other dumb-ass "my car's not on the road and I'm a loser, so I'll dress up my bike and make vroom vroom sounds" stuff.

I asked at the local shop where I bought the bike and they thought I was a freak. If it's not a $2500 mountain bike they have no idea.

I've looked on eBay and on various American sites, and the parts are easy to get and not too expensive, but shipping and duty are friggin' killer.

Anyone know of any Canadian sites/stores/suppliers for cruiser stuff?

I've never had any luck finding those types of parts in this country. I've followed leads to small businesses that had dried up by the time I got there half a dozen times, in most cases they were hobiest businesses on the BC coast. Even building my latest Ti mountian bike this past spring I sourced most of my components from the US.
Right now I think the guys to ask would be Jaks in Regina, Saskatchewan
http://www.jakz.com you'll like their frames, they sell a lot of frames on ebay, very seldom I see a complete bike for sale, I suspect it's the component sourcing problem.

Big, check out Memory Lane Classics in Ohio. They'll send your stuff thru USPS so shipping is reasonable. You pay the taxes and USUALLY a 5$ customs fee.
By the way, check out my daily rider:

    Just had another thought

six5monster just went back to bicycles didn't he? maybe he can source pieces (and roadster them to Bonneville) or perhaps ship 'em reasonably to foreigners like us.

  6. Jakz makes some damn cool frames alright.

Mike, John_from_oz is heading in your direction. We just had him and Jan here in ON for a few days. Nice folks. I showed them all the touristy stuff in Niagara Falls. Water, going over a cliff, big deal. [IMG]

I've got some friends and family in Vancouver, I'll see if they can find any suppliers. Dammit, I had a set of springer forks in my hand a couple of weeks ago and didn't buy 'em cuz I didn't want to carry them home. Should have done it anyway.

  7. WR, thanks for the link. Your daily rider look pretty damn cool too. Is that new/old/repro/restored or what? I know NOTHING about Whizzers, except what I've seen from your other posts.

BigA, that's a 1941 Schwinn DX, equipped with a 1949 Pixie cyclemotor kit. 100% original...
You'd buy the kit and install it on your bike.
    39cc, 2 stroke, 2 speed, 125 miles a gallon.
Made in my hometown - Montreal.

If you need a chromed springer (a la Schwinn) I can send you one from the Lowrider shop in my heighborhood? Jusletmeknow...

  10. WR, would it be a big deal to get a price for me? I'm striking out over here. There's gotta be a lowrider shop in Toronto, but I'm not up there too often these days. Shipping from Montreal has got to be cheaper than Vancouver.

    I'll PM ya.

I lived in Westmount in the early 70's BTW, pretty WASPy back then. I guess that's not the case anymore?
