After you buy your fire system, cage, driving gear, harness, tires, etc. You're up to about $3500. Then you have to p*** tech (with a minimum of two inspectors since its the first time for the vehicle). "Most" don't the first time, so you'll have a year to fix the 'little' things. Then you can take your license p***es. After you read the rule book about 10 times, you'll understand. I'm not trying to discourage, its not "Just show up and run" like most people think.

4. About 50% of the board will be there, at least it will seem that way!

Just go and watch, lots to learn anyway you slice it.

Yeah, roll cage and wheel/tire requirements are going to kill you. Along with fire bottles, shut offs, vents, and all. You should be looking at the USFRA 130 mph club. Runs in September on the same salt and allows street driven cars. Check their web site.

Just don't park your truck on the street next to the salt.

Sorry, I had to say that......if you do go the first time, I would suggest watching and listening to EVERYONE and saving your coin for building your truck to race the following year. If you have someone local that races at the salt they may be able to help you, but as everyone has mentioned read the rule book and read it again and again.

The USFRA event would be the one to go to if you want to run your truck. You still have to p*** a tech inspection but the requirements are more street driven car friendly.
I plan to be watching with the rest of the guys if I can get the time off . I went in 88 and 98.

I''ll say this, It isn't a good place to take high maintenance significant others. If they get bored at a rod run or show they are going to get very bored at Bonneville. I guess you could leave them at the motel or casino.

I wouldn't recommend taking small kids either as there isn't anything for them and a sunburned kid isn't any fun at all.

Do take=
Some sort of shade, a beach umbrella works great, don't take anything you have to drive pegs in the ground/salt to tie down as that is highly frowned on.

Liquids besides beer, Water or some Gateraide kind of drink is a must.
lunch stuff unless you want to buy off the lunch wagon.
Sunscreen, The sunburn stories are legendary.

You might just catch hell if you get off the path to take photos but you can easily stop along the route back and forth to the race course and get some great photos without getting (shall I say out of bounds) There is no need to go driving off where you shouldn't be to get photos. Besides that the tow bill will break your hotrod budget for the next ten years.

Ten years ago there was a guy there with a big old Lincoln MK something that was charging guys **$$ to make a p*** in the car. It would steady ready run 145 all day long. You had to go through the drivers meeting and sign all the right papers but you ended up qualifying for a compe***ion license for 150 mph. A couple of guys took him up on it so they would be licensed when they took their own car back the next year.

There is no was to run at a SCTA or BNI event on the cheap... Pick up a rule book and prepare to be confused. I pit for a V4F Model t, p***ing tech is a ***** and operates on a "who you know" system.
The experience is unbelievable, you have to stand up in a truck be or atop of a motor home and look out on to the salt...You can see the curve of the earth, puts things into perspective...
As for el mo stick around in Cali, thats a better experience for trying to learn the basics of LSR, you can get up really close... Hit me up if you make it out here Ill have a beer or 12 with you...

Sad to say I dunno if I'm making it this year. Its supposed to be *******... I guess its the 60th 9dont quote me on this) anniversary of the bonneville meets. Tons of spectators, no hotels to be had in wendover, if I were you I would just camp outside of wendover between town and the entrance to the flats. Its cheaper and you won't be wasting 100's on the tables. There is always a little camp of racers out there... Last year wasn't that hot it actually rained on us a bit... The strangest thing is to walk barefoot on the salt, its way colder than the air temp...

If you are "white" (fairskinned), dont wear shorts.... The sunlight will bounce off the salt and burn your nuts. Hat, sunblock, long pants. Maybe a bandana to soak and put on the back of your neck (cools you down quick). It all depends on the weather, some years its hot as all get out and some its mild.
Lots of water, or other forms or hydration. Everyone there is nice as ****, a guy that I've never met let me use his truck cause ours had our tool box ( a roll out) mounted in it as we were prepping for a run, I had to go into town for oil.
