I have a Packard straight eight and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it. It says "thunderbolt" on the head. It is attached to a tranny with the word ultramatic cast into it. What did this come out of, where can I get parts, and how much is a running one worth.
Sounds like you have a 327 C.I. motor. They were built with ultramatic transmissions in the early 50's. I'm sure somebody else will chime in with more info. From what I hear, the Ultramatics were not very strong. That is absolutely a cool looking engine when fixed up. Somebody on here has one with a supercharger on it. Oh, try Egge.com for parts.
It would be a 288 from 1950 to 1952, 327 was an option and standard in 1953. its the same block and head. a 288 and 327 will say "288" in small numbers on the head between #1 & #2 cylinder. You will have to get the numbers stambed on a pad on the drivers side back of the block just below the cylinder head and referance them to know which it is. Ultramatic was the standard auto available, also came with overdrive. I have a 52' 200 Deluxe Touring with the 288 and ultramatic. PM me if you have any questions on it.
I would guess it to be a 327 Packard. The trans can be switched to a Chrysler 727. Alot of nice Packards have been converted with this kit. Alot of the Packard clubs do not take points away for having this trans swap. Ter409
