Decent HVLP gun for under $200.00 ??????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Apr 19, 2008.

  1. I'm currently using a HF hvlp gun to do the primer on my car. While I am happy with it for primer, I'm thinking I may want a better gun for laying down the color. I'm going to shoot the car with single stage urethane. Does anyone have any first hand experience with some of the less expensixe "decent"quality guns? I'm looking at spending $200.00 or less. I was looking at the Sharpe Finex but still not sure.

I've actually had terrific results with the Kobalt HVLP gun from Lowe's. It's like $100 and has really put down some good paint for me.

A painter at a local body shop told me about a good quality gun for a reasonable price. The gun is made in Germany and is an Optima. The model 500i can be found on-line for right at $200. This painter works in a professional shop and uses this model gun exclusively with great results. I bought mine a month ago and have used it 3 times and I am very happy with it.

I don't think you're going to want to spray an entire car with a MiniJet. I love my MiniJet2, but I wouldn't consider spraying a large area with it. Might take some time.

    Thats what I would recommend.

Ditto, I have one at work for spraying S/S stuff and oil based enamels. It works real well for the price. I even used it with POR15 and it worked out well.

Look on ebay for an Iwata or a Sata 2000 or 3000. You can probably get one for close to your $200 and you'll never want or need another gun. Get a 1.4 tip and you can spray both base and clear. No way on the mini jet. That's made for touch up and spot repair.

I have the Lowe's gun and it seems OK, but I dont hardly do much painting outside dashes, furniture and misc parts, but it seems to work well. I dont have place to spray a car so I have yet to do a full car.

Yeah, I got a finish one and liked it so much I bought another w/ the primer tip. About 3 years ago they were 89-99 bucks each.

Devilbiss is what I own. Of course, mine was courtesy of the USNavy. I figured after all the damn helicopters I painted the least they could do is cough up the gun I had used for the whole time I was in.
That was 20yrs ago and I still have the same guns. The large, medium and small air brush.

p.s. I got no gripes about it and I've heard they aint that expensive....but then again....I'm known for my procurements....
I built this from ALL genuine US Military parts...even the wheels...

I have a Sharpe Cobalt that I got at NAPA for right around a $100. I have been very happy with it.

I bought a DeVilbiss Finshline set with 2 guns and various tips from Eastwood and couldn't be happier, i think it was right around 2 bones. I have also heard really good things about the new DeVilbiss Dr D for $169.95 from Eastwood. Had an Astro and wouldn't use it for a cheapo primer job now that I've used something better.

  19. No way in hell your paying close to $200 for a Sata 2000 or 3000 unless they are used up pieces of junk and need a total rebuild.

A new needle, air cap and head alone are $180.00. Keep that in mind when buying a used up Sata.

For me ....who rarely paints anything I just run down to harbor freight and buy a cheapo hvlp. It's the purple one .....usually under 35 bucks I think. It is a SATA ripoff, but I figure they reverse engineered it so it is probably a decent gun. I have sprayed a lot of primer with one of these and a couple of whole cars. Best part is,when I don't get it clean (it has been known to happen once or twice) it is cheap enough that it can be a throwaway.
Now if I were a real painter I would probably spend the big bucks and buy a better quality gun (or at least spend more cash)

I bought a Devillebis Starting line set for $165 canadian and I love them. The 1.8 primer gun works great for flake. I use the 1.3 for enamels and single stage ureathane, 1.5 for clears. Awesome value.
