Was in the junkyard today, and there was a 51 dodge fire truck. Had a flathead 6 in it, with factory dual single barrels and dual exhaust (two seperate manifolds). I just thought it was odd. I'm assuming it was a heavy-duty only kind of thing?

I've got dual carb manifold and dual exhaust on my Studebaker flathead 6... aftermarket, but not unheard of.

I've had a couple stock dual carb/exhaust setups for Dodge sixes. Farmers around here tended to pull them off, thinking they were too complicated. They work well if you dial them in right, and the exhaust note is incredible!

I'm looking for a set up like this for my desoto. it is the longer 25 in. block sort of the same as the chrysler. I guess they call them big sixes. if any of you find one and are willing to sell P.M. with a price and we can go from there. specially if you are getting it from the junkyard!!!!!

My guess is that it was a heavy duty flat six. Much larger than anything they put in cars, and only used in large trucks.

Seems to me I read something about them once, but can't remember where.

What is it that makes you so sure it's a "factory set-up"? In 1951 a lot of independent truckers who used Dodge tractors installed Ellis systems to gain power and, supposed, economy.

This was optional factory equipment 1 1/2 ton and up. Chryco made several big 6's including a 413 cubic inch for over the road trucks. Those truck engine are the long block version so they will fit chyrsler, desoto and Canadian manufactured automobile 6's. The 300+ and 413 6's were 30 or 33 inches long can't remember for sure so their manifolds (a tripple intake was available) were only for those engines.

My Father had a customer in the early 1950's that had a Dodge tractor trailor with this set up He made a 600 mile round trip to Chicago twice a week. If I remember, the told me it had 413 cubic inches. Got around 5 mpg.

Easy; if it's cast iron, it's factory. Chrysler made a dual carb&exhaust setup for the 25 inch Chrysler/DeSoto style engines in the medium duty trucks.

If you dig around mopar's site, they will tell you the were equipped that way from the factory. I made several copies of old Dodge (early 50's) factory photos with descriptions off the net. There were at least four different c.i. sizes with the dual carb and exhaust. The largest was 413 c.i.

Saw this setup in Genessee Idaho on some large Dodge stake truck....that was back in the late 50s...the truck had been around a few years. Guy told me it was factory, but I didn't believe him at the time.

Here's a pic of one a buddy of mine and I pulled from an old Dodge dump truck on a farm near here. This thing is definitly a factory setup but I doubt you could get it to fit in a passenger car or for that matter even a pickup. The head is 33 inches long!

I was just daydreaming the other day that he factory should have figured out a way to squeeze those bigger sixes with the duals into their wayfarer roadsters. Would have been a cool combo.

Since the the 331/413 Truck engines are 10 inches longer at 33 inches, than the 230, you might need a bit longer wheel base. And at 1000+ lbs, for just the engine some beefier springs and bigger wheels and tires might be in order.

If you cut the firewall will it fit? Hmmmm, sounds like a cool project. Will the truck 4 speed fit back there too or is it too much of a stump puller?

  20. That big truck six would most likely have big truck five speed trans..171 hp & 343 torque

This was my Grandfather's '54 Dodge road tractor. It had the 413 six in it. The mufflers were gutted, giving it a beautiful sound.

  23. I was thinking of a straight 8. My brother has a marine one but now maybe a big six would be fine

Had some nieghbors who's Father bought a 49 Dodge big truck, possibly 3 ton? 10:00X20 tires, it even had air brakes on it and it had the same setup from the factory. Sounded real good with the glass packs it had on it. Used to see them at the feed store with it. And 60 mph was no problem for that thing.

Easier to shorten the manifolding and use on the smaller engines if the port mounting spacing is the same.

  26. Ever since you guys talked about this i have been dreaming of one. If i wanted to buy a flathead dual carb motor (413 cubes)(. Not cracked is all I ask) Who has one they would sell reasonable near me? A days drive is near i think.

My dad bought a '59 Chris Craft boat in 1960 with a 6 cyl. Chrysler with dual single barrel carbs and I think it came that way from the factory. I recently bought it from my nephew who bought it from my dad several years ago. He says he has a manifold for it with 3 single barrel carbs. I haven't seen that manifold yet so I don't know if it is cast iron or not. Would look pretty cool on that flat six.

1954 Dodge truck folder lists dual carb , dual exaust for the 265.37 cu in 6 availible in J6 & K6 conventionals. J was 2 1/2 T, K was 2 1/2 T HD. Shows 13hp gain over the single carb 123hp motor. And 3 hp over the little 241" hemi that was Doge trucks V8 option.

I think the 331-377-413 series is based on the original big
Chrysler 7 main bearing six from the 1920s. For competitive
reasons the luxury car market went to straight eights and Chrysler
enlarged the block design of its big six for use in heavy duty
trucks. I think the 413 have 5 inch strokes

In this era Chrysler was selling 4+ ton trucks, which you did not see
in Chevy and Ford. There was a diesel 331 in about 1939.
Metalurgical advances allowed for dependable four main
inline six crankshafts in the 1930s when Chrysler introduced its
popular line of L-head automoble sixes in two series that we are
familiar in the cars. The old seven bearing six continued on in
    large trucks.

  30. Here's one in a big truck, in the collection of a guy with lots of old
    Dodge trucks.
