Now you've done it. Gone and told the world how dumb us old guys can be. Imagine, giving away parts and advice. I was hoping it would just be considered senility and passsed off as a bunch of old geezers loosing their minds.
Instead I think I'll just double the price of that flathead and 6 deuce manifold we talked about. Nothing like getting a youngsters attention like hitting him in the wallet. Besides, I just remembered I'm going to fix that old flathead up someday.;)
There................that should put him in his place.:)

I was telling an old buck about my A pu project. Mentioned I had a 401 for it. "Yup. Good motor. Used to run those".
Next day he walked in with a bell housing and aluminum flywheel. "Thought you could use these." I was speechless.
    Thanks Frank.

Or I'll just send LuckysGal to get that stuff. She'd get a better deal on it anyways.:D

I try to talk to old folks as much as possible because they have tons of stuff lying around and they aren't going to be around much longer then you can swoop in and get a bunch of stuff for free/cheap because their kids don't know what it is worth. I love old folks, all senile and whatnot. Just bring earplugs and nod and smile alot when they're talking.

Ummm.....I think you completely missed the point of this thread. Its not a chore, or something you suffer through when you listen to old timers. The idea is to LEARN from their experiences and absorb as much iformation as possible. That should be reward enough. If you hang out with old guys solely for the purpose of aquiring parts then you're in this for the wrong reason. How you going to learn anything wearing earplugs?

I love old guys. My dad has a friend in Western Nebraska, he has an old farm that has been in the family since the 20's. They never threw anything away. Every car they have had since about 1925 is still there. Old Essexes, Pontiacs, T's, A's, a single Duece 4dr Sedan, old plymouths, dodges, buicks, the newest thing there was a '73 or 4 Ford Wagon. Plus all the old tractors from the 20's up until the late 50's were there...all of which were John Deere or International. We ended up walking away with all 57 Cars, and 38 Tractors. Plus a bunch of random odds and ends, hundreds of old tools, a few old lawn mowers, farm equipment, signs, engines, endless amounts of bounty. One day when he wasn't home dad slipped $1,500 under his door...2 weeks later it was in our mail box in check form. His only request is that a few of the cars and tractors get restored and put to use, and what ever is left finds a good home.

Learning by books coupled with trial and error is pretty inefficient compared to hands on guided by application of knowledge. I'm three classes away from finishing my welding engineering technology degree. In exactly zero classes did we learn any techniques by trial and error. Our instructors told us the best way to go about things and why. Your approach is waaaaayyyyyyy too expensive. If you owned a business would you want to pay somebody doing a job by trial and error?

  20. I think all of us geezers can agree on one thing, you picked the right name!!!:D:D:D

  21. Lucky, thanks for posting this. Guys that get it realize that having friends that share this whole thing is what its all about, no matter what age they are. If you like old cars you are into history of them, whether you know it or not. What better way to learn it, than from the guy who did it years ago? Beats the hell out of a book!

I take the time to talk to everyone that walks over to start up a conversation when I am on the road in my roadster. No matter how dumb the comments are. I have stories from old folks that have told me: I used to have a Model A, 1940 Ford, etc., I bought one new, or I used to have to ride in the rumble seat when I was a kid and froze my ass off!, and more. I have a great deal of respect for the older generation, especially "the Greatest Generation" that we are losing now. I think the times they experienced, the Great Depression, WW II, the Korean conflict, and the prosperity of the fifties, were epic things to experience in their lifetimes, and I envy that experience.
