Hey guys, is there anything besides primer that could be put on bare metal panels to prevent rust until I can properly epoxy primer my car? I am hoping for some sort of chemical that could be put on the bare metal to block rust, then cleaned off while prepping for paint... Deal is, my uncle is letting me use his paint booth, but i need to have it completely stripped before I take it to his place. I don't have the equipment for spraying a proper epoxy primer at my place. I'm hoping it will only be a couple weeks to a month between stripping and priming... I know my bro's Model A frame was shipped soaked in WD40 to prevent rust between the supplier and my brother, would that work for me? Thanks guys!
If it's a couple of weeks, I would use Eastwood Metal Wash, POR-15 Metal Ready or PPG DX520. I believe they are all basically the same thing...phosphoric acid and detergent with a little zinc added. I've only used the POR-15 Metal Ready and I've had great luck with it. When used properly, it will give you a nice etched surface with a rust resistant zinc phosphate coating. The key is to keep the surface wet with the product when you are treating it and then follow with a good rinse and air dry. Make sure there is no standing water. regards,
I use this on my bare metal, you can prime right over it. It's a corrosion preventative polymer resin. www.nyalic.com , ask for Skip when and if you call. Tudor
Thanks Tudor, didn't see any pricing info on their site. You happen to remember off the top of your head how much the stuff costs?
