Just not paying attention in psychology today thinking about how many HAMBer's are teachers in high schools and elementary schools.

It's what I'm going to school for, but still am unsure about what to do with myself. Can you be a teacher and still have time to work/drive/have fun with your hot rod or kustom, or is it just work all the time?

    Just curious.

Business Teacher here, though I'm currently subbing/supply(long-term sub) teaching until I can get a real contract somewheres. But the simple answer is yes. Where there is a will there is a way.

I'm a junior high band director and part time college professor. I conduct my music groups with cut/scarred hands and knuckles! Everyone in the school thinks its the **** when I roll up to school in one of my rides.

My wife and I have tons of time off: every holiday, two weeks at Christmas, a week in the spring and most of the summer. My summer is cut short because I coach high school football, but I still have lots more time than friends or my dad with normal jobs. Not only that, but I get 15 days a year to do what I want with, so if I need to take off just to work on the car I can.

    June. July. August.

I'm lucky enough to have started teaching before all the jobs left Michigan and enrollment started to drop. A new teacher might find it tough in a state like ours to secure a teaching position (unless you sign up for combat pay in a less desirable district). In any case, I found that once I got in and became settled, I could enjoy good wages, excellent benefits and plenty of time off. Out of school at 2:30? Plenty of time to enjoy your cars.

However, you have to love what you do. This isn't a job you go into just for the time off. I'm sure you remember a few ****ty teachers.

And... Pay varies widely from state to state, as do benefits, cost of living, etc. Do your homework before you settle into a position.

Hope this helps. Awesome profession where you can really make a difference.

By the way, make friends with the shop teacher.

I come from a long line of teachers and they all have enough time to do their hobbies. If your car hobby is serious enough then you will make time...teachers don't work anymore than welders, mechanics, business or any other profession...well unless its a part time gig most will work 60 hours or so and they don't get summers and all holidays off....

Hmmm, never realised how many of us were teachers on here...god help the kids LOL.

I am doing Economics and Street Law in high school right now.

Funny that this post came up today. I pm-ed Bobby from Old Crow and told him I had been using his shop, Troy's shop, and Evel's Mad Fab stuff as examples of small companies that found niches and such...got the kids interest for about five seconds.

So many of my students are very boring...rap, IPOD's, and games or rap, IPOD's and lame attempts at picking up the other ***...or the same one in some instances.

It can be a meaningful work. You'll notice that most teachers are very resourceful, being "skillful" about how money is carefully meted out! Use libraries, have a film sharing group, "trade off" work and barter when you can. Many older teachers I know worked to be able to own rental property and gradually built up outside income. In this way they eventually had time for other things and pursuits.

I am a retired Industrial Arts Teacher. I really liked my job but I never saw the short hours that I hear a lot about. Some of my summers off were spent going back to college to take mandatory refresher cl***es and to continue my education. In Missouri your pay is based on the highest college degree and the number of college credit hours you have. Teaching is great but it is the lowest pay of any profession. I have never owned a new car in my life or a new house. But by working second jobs in addition to teaching I have been able to do a lot of stuff. I have owned and built a bunch of hot rods.

Most everywhere I go in my local area, I see people that I had in cl*** and it is really fun to visit with them. A lot of them are car people.

Presently I drive a school bus twice daily to supplement my retirement income. I also build hot rods and I work on rods for customers. Life is good but teaching is not an easy job. Not every child comes to school bubbling with energy and anxious to learn. The sons and daughters of the best and the worse of America come to school most everyday.

I am a Technology Education teacher and still have the time to work on and drive them. I teach 7th and 8th grade. Lots of time off. This week is one of them. I also did not think about how many teachers are on here.

  16. I've taught music in high, middle and elementary (currently teaching general music K-5). It's a great profession to get into, but LOOK CAREFULLY at what you are getting into. I love my current school- great kids, willing and helpful parents, and a terrific staff/admin., but the job I came from was horrible- 70+ hour work weeks (marching/pep band), pushy parents, apathetic and spoiled kids, etc.
I'm NOT trying to scare you away, but get info on who you are interviewing with- yeah, you will ALWAYS find someone who thinks the principal is a pain, but get the advice and info before you sign on the dotted line.

I'm a 1st year 6th grade math teacher. I've got plenty of time to play with my cars, I just have to catch up on the bills that all slipped while I was going to school.

Right now, we're working on a project with regards to measurement. My 6th graders are building doghouses to donate to the SPCA. I'm coming up short on funding, but would happily take any help that could be offered.

Its great to be able to share some of what you enjoy with those who are so young and impressionable.

    I teach Auto Body to 10th, 11th & 12th grade.

I try to "preach" as much Hot Rod as I can.....Someone has to spread the gospel to the next generation......

I'm looking forward to the summer out of school, but I plan on working all summer on projects. When I'm not at summer workshops for teaching.

When I retired from the Aerospace industry after nearly 40 years as a mechanical engineer I decided to teach. I teach 8th grade Science and most of the kids are a pain. They are rude, disrespectful and think school is a waste of time. On the upside, some of thise kids want to learn, think I walk on water and come spend time after school just to "hang out". Those are the ones that make it all worth while. They love my old cars and several of them have drug their parents to local car shows to see one of my cars. A couple have even started on cars of their own. I am glad I didn't choose teaching as a lifelong career but I am glad that I get to have an affect on a few young minds. Like any job, it has its ups and downs. Summers off are the bomb!!

I have taught auto body and auto mechanics for about 23 years. We have 6 weeks and 2 days left this year!!! most days are fun. Today ****ed, 1st hour some kid stole a game boy out of a back pack. Good news is that we caught the dirty *******.
We have been pretty busy even with the senior slide starting. Shop projects are a 1967 Caprice -frame off, and recently a 1935 Ford Pickup.Anybody have a 35 grill or advice on getting spark on a flathead?

  21. Not a teacher yet. I'll be doing my student teaching in the fall. Will have an elementary and special ed. certificate when done. One of the reasons I chose this career is for the time off. Summers I can wrench on the autos and spend time with the family. Definitely get to know the district and all staff before taking a job, can be the difference between heaven and hell.

It's funny, I've never been good at school. I'm like, natures 2.0 GPA student. But I've always been really cool with my teachers.. They seem to be groovy people. I'd almost see myself as a subs***ute teacher. Hell, I get to pace around the room and be absolutely insane one period and be awesome the next..

Shop Teacher, check those wires, plugs and I know most aren't a fan, but my flatty sat for a while, and I put in the Petronix ignitor and it works like a charm.

I have a job lined up for me, the department chair said as soon as I get my bachelors, to come back, and she will either find me a position in my old high school, or help me find a job elsewhere. It's good to kiss a lot of *** in school.

This really helped me and It's been said before, there really is a lot of teachers into hotrodding and it's pretty awesome. If they had shop here on long island, I would be ecstatic, but its technology, and all you really make is a name plate for a desk.

I live on Long Island, one of the highest-paid teacher areas around the US, so it's not like it's a bad paying job.

I was a autobody mentor for a year. Does that count?

  26. I've been in education for 14 years...

Subs***ute teacher for 1 year... taught Industrial Arts Woodworking for 10 years and have been an ***istant Principal for 3 years!

    I love it.

I'd like to go back to teaching and do Auto Shop... who knows... might not be any jobs in my area... so I may just go on to becoming a principal...

Either way, I get summers off and leave my work at work and have plenty of time on the weekdns and after work to do car stuff.

    Educate on.

    Sam.

High School English Teacher. I come from a long line of school teachers, mainly shop teachers. My dad and my uncle still teach 78 years between the two, both auto shop and industrial arts. I love every day of my job and wouldn't trade it for the world.
