Well, here I sit on my couch, my foot elevated above my heart. my prescribed dose of Percocets, and everything within arms reach. I just had a tendon and two ligaments repaired in my left ankle. A year and a half after I injured them in Iraq. I am on leave for 21 days, and I want to get out there and get some work done on the old car. I remember reading the threads about 5wbomber and his mishap, and another about a gentleman that broke his leg on a ladder. Hope you guys are doin well, but how did you guys do it. Did you guys fight the pain and get back out there, or did you relax while you got the chance to heal?

    Relax,and let your body heal.

If you push your luck,it will take longer to heal, and you risk more damage.

wow they only gave you 21 days to heal up?
I would stay on the couch, if you further the damge it could make things only worse for you in the future.
    Thanks for your service.

  4. Let them heal up for a few days....you do NOT want to mess it up right after the surgery...and you will.

You're just bored. Get $50 worth of mags from the local store, or better yet have someone else do it for you, and relax. :D

My dad went back to work with a bad ankle when he was 23. He's 53 now, same bad ankle. 21 days or 30 years, do the math.

Well, although I usually try to "fight through" an injury or illness and just keep doing what I do whenever possible, it sounds like it might be better if you took it easy for a few days. Let the repair take a set and allow your body to heal itself a little bit...sounds like you're plenty young yet, so the process oughtta go fairly quick for ya!

In the meantime, watch some cl***ic "car guy movies" on DVD or surf the HAMB and maybe read some magazines...keep the creative juices flowing while your body tends to mending itself...then you'll be able to spring outta the gate and tackle whatever awaits you with a renewed vigor in a very short time!

Take care, and heal up soon!!

    :)

5 screws in my ankle, when they say keep it elevated they MEAN IT. the more you rush things the more you will pay for it later....

  8. Better to be laid up for a couple of weeks than hobbling for the rest of your life!

Oh, and thank you for sering our country!

Take care and get better, Bill

I've been racing motocross since the mid 1970's til present day.
I've had every variation of joint damage.
Don't push it when it comes to tendons & ligaments and such.
If you do just as you are told you can heal them relatively quick.
If you continually aggrevate them, you will be lucky if they ever heal right.

Let it heal. A few days/weeks of boredom will be well worth it in the long run. I had a back injury at work years ago, rushed back to be the good "company man" and still have problems from time to time. It's just not worth it. Look out for yourself and get better!

I am a medic in the army, and I know about letting it heal, this isn't the first time I have been laid up. (Knee surgery 2 years ago_. I just get so damn bored, and want to get up and get after it.

Compromise...let the ankle alone, rebuild a carburetor or something, or just fire up the advanced search function on the HAMB and bone up on tech...educational TV at its finest!

I say take the time. I think you have well earned the time needed to rest yourself and heal correctly.

I'm in the same boat Amigo. I broke my leg on April 1st when there was still snow and ice out. I went to the doctor yesterday and found out I'll be at least another month on crutches. It's been warm, sunny and beautiful for a week and a half now, all the snow is gone, and my desire to plunge back into cars is almost killing me. It hurts to sit on the couch and watch the precious warm sunny days slip away more than it hurts to have a busted leg.
I know I shouldn't rush it, can't rush it, but DAMN I know what you're talking about. Best of luck healing and know you're not alone. Misery loves company.

p.s. Thanks for all that you and your brothers do.

Last April got high ankle sprain the first day of Pate swap meet. I am tough, I'll just walk through it, one year later and I have to live with a brace that comes up to my knee so my ankle can heal in the next six months or one year. Do as the doctor told you, life is not fun when every step hurts like you are walking on hot coals.

You would think by now, someone would've mentioned "watch some ****".

Seriously, take your time and heal right the first time.
Again, thanks for your service over there. We really appreciate that.

Sit back, relax, watch Oprah:D & let it heal. And not too many brewskis with the Percs or you will never stop smiling.
The car will be there patiently waiting it's time.
Thanks for serving, keep your head down, & Gods speed.

don't be a *****, get back to work. I've broken both my ankles twisted my knees several times and I've never been to the doctor, they healed up fine and I was back to work the same day. Liquor makes a better pain killer than any of those fancy pills plus it's not as addictive as the pills either. Nothing hurts now except of cold days, or rainy days, days where it's overcast, days that smell like rain, days that are too hot and days where I don't feel like doing work around the house.

Preach that gospel, brotha. Can I get an Amen?

  29. Just echoing what everyone else has said...
If the Doc says rest, then rest.
When the doc prescribes therapy...do it.
If he gives you a brace, wear it.
I stopped wearing my knee brace for a while and now I'm searching for it to help stabilize the joint because I push too hard.
Don't mess with ligaments and tendons.
They will haunt you a lot longer than 21 days.

  30. That there is some fine advice.
