Does anyone know how to refurbish old lead acid batteries? What I am talking about is one that is sulfated. I have heard of this being done, but never heard how to.

    Thanks,

Try a marine supply store in your area. West Marine, Port Supply, etc, maybe even a good RV supply store.

Plate sulfation is a fairly common occurance in boats that sit in their slip unattended for long periods of time. There is a small charger-like device that goes across the battery and delivers a high frequency (around 3.6MHz) pulse train to the posts. This high frequency energy slowly breaks the chemical bonds on the plate and the battery recovers. Sorry, I don't remember the company's name.

    Cheers, Mark

A teas**** of epsom salts in each cell used to be a used car lot trick to rejuvenate a battery long enough to get the car off the lot.

My dad used cadmium sulfate back in the day. Be careful, it is quite poisonous.

I was told of this trick by an old timer I used to work with, and have tried it a few times with decent results.

First, take a 12v light bulb and socket and attach it to the terminals on the battery and let it completely drain a battery. Leave it on for a few days. Then, reverse the polarity of your trickle type charger and give the battery a full charge. Do the light bulb thing again to completely discharge the battery for a few days. Once this is done, hook up the charger with normal polarity on the battery and charge it up to full charge.

Something about doing it this way supposedly 'jolts' the battery back into working. I've done it, and it seems to work okay. Try it yourself and see.

A trick used back in the '40's & '50's. Drain each cell intp a clean mason jar and mark which one it came from. Then, turn the battery upside down and wash each cell out with a stream of water to wash the lead that has left the plates and shorted them out. I've heard several old guys in their '70's tell of doing this during WWII when new batteries weren't available.

So how long does a "rejuvenated" battery last. Buy a new one and don't worry about starting when you're north of East Lost Overshoe Minn. on a Saturday night.
