We have a guy here in town that has a machine that turns them down. $20.00 a tire is going rate. I get them done for $10.00 because I do so many! AL:)

I painted mine. Two coats f "KILLZ" and three coats of exterior latex. Working pretty good so far. Where the white insert in the tire is they stay very white, the rest has to be touched up about every six months.

I always wondered if grinding the side wall would jeopardize the integrity of it? I know its just a thin layer taken off, and Ive never heard any horror stories, but.... Tire looks damn good though, and definately an alternative to the big $$$.

I wonder if you put the rear on jackstands, and had it turn slowly while you ground on it if it'd turn out pretty smooth? might need someone in the car to stop things if it got outta control though.

I'll have try that on my 50 ford it has the narrow white wall on the rear. I've heard of this but never seen it. Thanks for the picture, looks good.

  10. Check this place out:

He says he makes any tire into a white wall through the process of "cold vulcanizing". I tried finding out what "cold vulcanizing" is, but couldn't find anything on it. I'm curious is anyone has ever heard of it or tried this?

I recently shaved a set down for a guy, turned out pretty good. Just takes practice. Your supposed to be careful and not take off more than needed, so shouldn't hurt the integrity of the tire. I like this method better than porta-walls, they suck

i sanded my tires down with a flexdisc grinding wheel and then smoothed them out a bit with a metal buffing pad on the grinder, not perfectly flat but i dont care and theyve been there for almost a year now with now probs and mines a daily driver

cold vulcanizing.....sounds like a good coat of cantact adhesive to me! (rubber cement and portawalls)

    Brewsir beat me to it...

Anyway, here's a link to the definition of vulcanizing. He's not using high heat (like tire factories) so it's got to be a chemical bond through some type of adhesive. His work looks cool in pictures, none-the-less.

I'd beware of this guy, i've seen enough bad stuff written about him on here to make me want to look elsewhere.

one time years ago i almost considered buying a set of port-a-walls and after mounting them getting some gorilla snot and gluing them down. instead i called coker and had a set of firestones shipped to me. but that cold vulcanizing sounds like thats what they are doing. i think i might see if there is anyone around here that cuts the whitewalls and get a set of radials done. the only time i run them is in the winter because they are more snow/ice friendly.
