I have searched the archives for an article or comment re installing a later Chev 1/2 rear end centre section in a 54 Chev 1/2 ton torque tube rear end housing. My gears are 3.90 and I want to go to 3.36 with the open drive shaft. There was an article or comment that stated 63-69 1/2 ton rears center sections bolt in and accepts the 54 axles. Can anyone confirm or clear up the issue.....A.J.

i don't think the axles will swap into the newer housing, but those year models you list have 6 lug axles from the factory. i am not sure about the width but have talked to a couple of guys that did a similar swap.

i also the swap you are talking about involves using 55 thru 59 center section, the later rear axle does not have a removable "pumkin". that said i don't think they came with a gear set higher than 3.90

  3. go to www.stovebolt.com they can answer all your questions. i would find a s10 4x4 rearend and convert the front to disc brakes. plus you end up with 5 lug pattern. the 3:31 your thinking of came in cars in 54' equiped with powerglide and doesn't interchange.

i doubt patric,s would have spend the money he did to come up with a torque tube gear set if the solution to the problem was this easy. your looking at changing out the axle assy.
