UPS came by my house today with a box that I have been waiting for. Inside the box was a brand new Offy manifold 4 duece ( 3 bolt) manifold which will end up on the T. I currently have the 2 stromberg 97's from a Non-Alliance vendor ( yes, kick my *** ) which are actullay pretty damn nice. They have some leaks around the accellerator pump rod but are still very usuable. The vendor who built them uses a silver eastwood paint which looks good. I have talked with Max about more carbs but he says his will be a different color so I need to do 4 that match ( makes sense even for me). So I am now looking at a bill of around 1.6 large to do the deal plus linkage fuel log etc. The new DEMON 98 is starting to look pretty good and they will be about the same price as the 97's. I know the look is not traditional but the ease of maintenance and the reduced cleaning supplies ( no leaks ) actually are starting to sound like maybe the decision to make

So, to my fellow HAMBers, help me make this decision correctly. The money part is not as big as being correct on the look. As near as I can tell, the only people who will be able to tell the difference are the guys who frequent the boards such as this.

So without further rambling...weigh in and help with this decision

I'm runnin' 4 97's.....be prepared for some small leaks.....and tuning issues....

I took my 2yr old son for a ride last Sat to a freind's house.....going up a hill close to his place, my truck started to run really rough and smelling VERY g***y. I made it to my freind's and had gas coming out all over on one of my 97's and spilling out on the intake and exhaust.....I popped the lid off, thinkin' the float was bad and had sunk (had that happen before too), but it was good. A piece of debris must have gotten lodged in the inlet, pressurizing the bowl, causing the rich condition, as well as spitting fuel out around the accel pump rod.
A tapped the float down and whatever was in there musta came out, as it ran fine with the top off. I bolted the lid back on and was good to go.

I never leave home without a flat blade screwdriver.......

I recently had Max rebuild one of my 97s and it's been like driving a completely different car! Max's carbs work and they work well.

If you're worried about matching carbs, send the two you have to Max and they will all look great.

As for the Demon's, I myself can't get past the way they look but that's just me.

None of us "hot rodders" live in the "real world", so you came to the wrong place for that opinion. We're all gonna tell you to use the Strombergs.

Max might have pity and give you a deal on recoloring your existing carbs. They'll probably even work better after he touches them, too.

I have talked with Max. It will be winter before he could even think about doing these.....and I am not stupid enough to have brand new rebuilds rebuilt....I'll sell them first....

and buy the 4 new ones.

As to the real world, we are all here....have you looked at the price of stromberg cores recently.....sort of matches the cost of gas. :(

It is easy to be smug. I can get that anywhere...it's the help from other rodders that I am interested in getting. I don't want to ruin a period correct hot rod but I also don't want to spend the rest of my driving time fixing **** either !

    So, any other idea?

seems like i recall reading recently that a company had started producing 97s again. new castings that pretty much do away with the old carb issues. might be worth a look to get the style without the headaches.

    Thin skin?

I wasn't being smug anyway. If you want real world, go buy a Honda. You aren't gonna get cheap parts or good gas mileage anywhere near a hot rod.

I thought you said Winter was when you wanted them. Things change fast around here; I shipped 14 this morning, with only 3 left to do right now. Bring 'em on. First come-first served. Or, if you can wait till the end of June, I'll take your two paintjobs in trade on New English ones.

Sounds to me like you've already made up you mind on the "Brand X" carbs....
You'll be sorry!!!!!!!!!Then you'll have to sell them to go back to the 97s...
Listen to what these guys are telling you!!!!!!!!!!

You're looking for an opinion and here it is...................use the Demons.
I started out going with a period correct Chopped Coupe, then stretched just a little, put a C4 behind the flathead, used the Joe Abbin blower setup (because I didn't want to spend $10K on a Scott setup) and actually put a demon 625cfm on top. Most of the rest is period..............but I wanted reliabilty, so I went with an MSD dizzy and electric fan...............again, reliability is the key for me, and like you said, 70% of the people looking at the motor will never know the difference in the Demons/97's.
Now with that said, if the 97's are rebuilt by people who know what they are doing, like Max, KenCT, and Strombergs97...................you will have no leaking, and they will be reliable, plus look totally period correct.

    IMHO

Thanks guys......I was leaning very heavily on going with the strombergs and was looking for a good reason not to go with demons. I'm very sorry I asked !

They are making brand new Stromberg 97s or you could even go with the Moon EFI s Stromberg look alikes. I'd go with the new Strombergs over a rebuilt set.
