Its kinda gotten to a point i dont get it anymore. i've been a fan and follower of the traditional style hot rod for a while, not very many people understood my truck but i did.
lately, with the Del-Ray, i've been getting a good ammount of flack from 8/10 people i talk to about it, the issue always comming up is the newer parts. Yes, my car has disk brakes up front, yes, it has power steering and yes, it has a centerbolt head 350. i get cursed for thouse parts but heres the thing, they were on/in the car when i got them, and i dont have a lot of cash, im only 18 and i just got fired from being a butcher. im dealing on pissant cash right now. yeah, i could rip the new parts off and sell them, but they are kinda
F%^$ed up and only good for what they are on now.
but if you saw the post about what the cars gonna end up like, is it really that big of a deal?
So what im getting at is, is it so bad to have new upgraded stuff on the car even if it goes agaisnt the grain of the style?

I say nope, build it like you like it, and damn everyone else. Post pics., I want to see....Be cool

  4. Your car, your money, it's a work in progress. Who gives a rat's ass about what others think? If someone questions it, politely say that they were on the car & will stay until you are ready to replace them (if in fact you even want to).

Beyond that, it's no one's business but your own. :)

Only to the "period specific" folks. If it runs and drives, then who cares. It's not their car, so they'll have to learn to get over it. :D

  8. You are the next mindset coming in. The old parts that are so important are being used up so much and priced so high, it is making sense to tell the "anal retentive(another form of Politically Correct)" in this hobby, to put up or fuck off.

This hobby is about fun, and being American when you get the chance!

Do yer thang bud, they will have to kiss your ass later. Just make it cool, make the art speak to you.

  9. You may have been talking a bunch of restorers....or possibly addressing the Del-Ray preservation society? :)

do it your way. DO you care what the traditionally perfect people want you to do?

    No? Then fuck em.

It takes alot of money, patience and effort to do a period perfect car. I applaud anyone who does it right...

No, I'm not going to do it. But nothing beats that look. :)

When people come up to tell me how MY car should be , I always say this , It's MY car and I will put or do what I want to it !! If you don't like it DON'T LOOK at it !! Then I ask them "WHERE IS YOUR HOTROD "? Then they walk away cause they don't have one . It take alot of money and time no mater what it looks like or what engine is in my car . It's mine and I love it and that all that matters . You have a hotrod to drive and have fun and the Hell with the other guy !!

Sounds to me more like some self appointed period police. Build what you like and can afford and make it shine if you like or not if you like.

Too me there isn't anything more traditional than making do with what you can afford. Hot rods have always been about what you can scrounge up from the junk yard and manage to piece together on a budget.

I'll be the first to admit I'm making a period piece. But not everyone does. Build the car the way you want to and with the best use of your cash.

And for the record, my 64 Studebaker 289 engine has center bolt valve covers and my 64 Daytona has disk brakes :p. At some point they will come together and become one like your Del Ray.

EggZactly, and updating for a better, faster, more reliable car. That's the hot rod tradition.

i compleatly agree with ya all. they just tell me its too much of a mix of new and old to work, i say, just like most of you, FUCK EM', i have what i want to have as a car, if it had a damn brand new 632 Merlin engine and Air Ride i wouldnt even care, it mine, im gonna drive the piss out of it when its done, Viva Las Vegas show, or Billitproof this year right down the street, its just gonna be at the end of the day, mine.

Hey, if somebody wants to tell you what to replace or upgrade on your car, listen politely, and then tell them that their suggestion is on your list of planned upgrades, and they are welcome to make a donation to move that item up to the top of the list! :D

    Heh, heh,

Let's see: superior, safer brakes, valve covers that don't leak, (even if they aren't as cool as the script ones, which you can't realistically run anyway), and power steering, which was originally available on your car. You need to talk to some different people, not the posers who want to tell how THEY would build your car if they had it, which they don't. Who cares what they think.

I might be drunk, but I think if you're going to replace the stuff with more period correct stuff it's ok...for now. If you're not going to replace the stuff...then...you substitute stopping well and reliability for coolness...is that wrong? Not in my book- 8/10 people would rather be able to stop before getting hit by a train... instead of looking cool before getting hit by a train. So there you go- look cool and spend that pissant money, or get hassled and be safe.

I had a well meaning fellow tell me the T was perfect but it should be flat black. I laughed my ass off, then gave him the list of light blue cars i have owned and how "baby blue" is a very traditional hot rod color, just look at a lot of the old magazines.

Laugh at'em it always confuses them that you don't really care what they think.

I am still chuckling over the look on his face when I loled.

Carry a receipt book and pulll it out and tell them you are taking donations. You'll change it when you get the money.

The only thing that matters is that you can take it out and enjoy it. I have to agree on one point there are some so called "traditional rodders" out there who are so anal about every detail having to be period correct that they might as well be restorers. Are they "building" a hot rod or "restoring" one, sometimes I can't tell.

i'm like'n what im hearing, shows im not as crazy as i thought.
i see it this way, why ruin old original parts with the insanely high miles that will be put on the car, The club im with, we go to shows, road trips and we do that a lot. my truck broke about 5 times the first few trips and it was all good original parts. so if i can beat the hell our of a part i can go to murrys or napa and say, give me another, and they DONT have to order it from a store in ohio and it comes in a box covered in dust, (rear brake hardwear, box said 1967 on it), then im happy with that too. its gonna be a beauty, and a beast, and not babied.

It's good to see a young man like yourself trying to be so period perfect on your car, there's really a pretty simple solution, dismantle everything your catching all the shit for, and let your car sit until you can find and afford so called traditional parts or, just drive the hell out of it and have some fun, screw all the critics.

Walled Lake, eh? You're just down the street! I'll be lookin' for your car. OK with me if its in my rear view mirror, cuz I know you can stop!

Life deals out enough crap. No need to go looking for it.

I kind of enjoy the response an older gent had, "Thank you, for giving me the benefit of your view!" (i.e. your opinion)
Don't fear, the restorers crowd has the same nitpickers :p

Just drive it, Its yours and if you like it so be it. Most 18 year olds want a honda around here. Just stick with what you want. Good luck.
