I have a 1939 coupe sitting in the shed and it needs a fair bit of work around the roof to sides joint, so I am toying with the idea of going for a stock looking 3 window conversion.
Does any one have pictures of any conversions they have seen and been impressed with. I am not interested in the minotti or CtoC fibre type shapes.
I am thinking about using Tudor doors with modified B pillars and reshaped door tops. etc etc etc.

I think it was Street Rodder, whi had a story about the subject, 8 or 9 yers ago. They had a lot af computer-made pics and it looked a lot like a Willys, with a Ford frontend

I was really impressed by these 3d renderings from Hamber "Palat", from the first HAMB art challenge. Very cool. You should definitely do this!

Someone did a dark blue one a few years back that actually looked factory (ie worked). I forget what parts were used, but it was a mag feature, Street Rodder I think. Might have been some Zephyr bits involved.

I'm not big on this idea usually because guys just fill the quarter windows, and it looks like something is missing. However, those 3D renderings of the 40 3W look AMAZING, someone should build it!!

I remember that magazine article. They did a whole s**** story on some factory one off for a moonshiner or something. It looked factory.

Tis is one of those cases where the drip rail has to be removed to make it look right. Especialy since it continues over the quarter window.

Here are two that I think really work. Unfortunately I suspect that both used Zephyr 3W tops, which must be hen's teeth these days:

Here's a visual comparison I did a while back to study the details of 3Ws I liked. The Willys and Lincoln tops are stock, the '36 is chopped, and as I said above I think the '37 and '40 have had roof transplants. Sorry for the ****py resolution, but this is about a 5th generation file:

James D those pictures by Palat are awsome! His site has some amazing pictures.....mindblowing Thanks for those.

X38 The dark blue one you mentioned belongs to Larry Richardson and as far as I'm concerned it is the best example I have seen so far. I even went through 10 years of Streetrodder mag to find the article on it and another concept article that he used for inspiration.

Rotorwrench.....Larry did not remove the drip molding, and I think it looks better with it on. The molding creats a continuity to the lines and is pleasing to the eye.

If anyone knows how to get in contact with Larry Richardson I would really appreciate an email address or postal etc..

    Thanks for your help.

Yes guys, that blue one (Larry Richardson) is the one I was thinking of. It's the only one that remotely works to me. Still, I'd prefer a stocker.

And thanks for the excellent comparison shots 50Fraud.

Funny - I was thinking the roof on the blue car doesn´t have enough length behind the door. Needs to be a few inches longer to look stock IMHO. Maybe because it doesn´t reach as far back as the rear fender, while on all the others it does. Its still a superb car though!

X-38 - any updates on your sloper?

What difference is there between the tudor doors and say the doors from a coupe? Never heard of a it before. Maybe you have a picture example?

One thing about the Jalopyshop version is it has a standard hood and grille. To me that's the logical choice for a frontend as the front profile falls off in a complimentary shape to the trunk area. The DeLuxe front gives a blunt shape to the front.

Looks like it has squarish shape to the rear of the door windows, ie. won't flow with the roof shape as nice as the blue one.

the door tops are a little more squared off in the back than the others, if i remember correct the doors were lengthened 8". it kinda gives it more of a hot rod vibe than custom like the others. i've got to go out that way in the next couple of days so i'll try and stop by and get some side profile shots of the car.

I think the dark blue car is the best example of a '40 3 window I've seen. The roof HAS to be shortened to make it work, anything else will come off as just having filled in the quarter window. Even the high dollar red '37 suffers from this, the rear pillar is way too thick. Also, attention needs to be paid in making the door tops a flowing arch, to match the roof line. Its hard to tell w/o having a good side shot of the jalopy shop car, but it looks like the door top is kinked and not flowing. Here are a few more pics of the blue '40, so you can see what I mean.

Tudor door are 7" and change longer than fordor and standard coupe doors, this makes access to the back seats in the tudor a bit easier.
