Not exactly HAMB material but......... I snapped this in 1982 at the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals in Springfield, IL. There was nothing else even remotely like it there. I always hated that body style but this thing just struck a chord........ Check out the shorts on the skinny dude in the background!

Moon discs were the hot setup in about '55 to '60 when I ran them on my nailhead powered '41 pictured below. The craze came straight out of Hot Rod magazines coverage of Bonneville where they originally showed up (and made sense). They became an overdone fad that didn't last long and were killed by cheapo snap in caps that started showing up on every stocker in town. As you can see by the pictures above they can really work on certain cars but just look kinda weird on others. Just my opinion.[IMG]

  13. My grandmother had one of these in mint condition; I always thought it would make a cool cruiser.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more homemade flat ones like this on the So-Cal Coupe,...especially engine turned!

<<<Am I the only person alive that thinks moon disk's are ugly?>>>

As in most car styling, they were originally a race item. (Ak Miller was the first to use them, but he simply made them up from flat aluminum sheet, 7075, .063" thick. He cut 4 17" discs, bored the centers out to clear axle nuts in rear, dust covers in front, and drilled discs and rims 120 degrees apart, sheet-metal screwed them on. Dean Moon saw them at Muroc Dry Lake, and turned some with enough dome to clear Ford axles. (He used to offer two depths, one "standard", and one "deep") When guys reversed wheels, they could use the standard ones on anything.
It takes an exceptionally 'clean' car to make the most of Moon discs. '58 Buicks have too much chrome trim to 'look' right, never mind the parasitic drag. Cleaned-off '53 Studebakers are a natural, if low enough...
The 'Full-Kustom' types look as stupid with discs as they would with slicks and parachutes! (think of the girl in black nylons and sneakers!)

  26. I used a set of the snap-on style for awhile until the inevitable loss of one. They then became trash can covers(with the clips removed)for my shop cans. Then I found the lost one after it had been customized by a large lawn mower. That one is now "ceiling art"

Here is my old Stude. They were teh Moon screw on kind. SCTA and ECTA require 6 screws instead of 3. Most do three sets of two screws, worked for me.

This gets my vote for the "perfect" car with Moons, until I get mine done that is. ;) Another one for the "Desktop Pics" folder.
