Getting ready to start thinking about steering ideas on my T modified. I'm looking for a Schroeder/like Sprint car set-up(let me know if you got one for sale).. But I am open to ideas, like really cheap ideas(but safe, the wife is gonna drive it as well)..So what are you guys running, what did you use, what to look for and what to stay away from.....Thank's in advance, Ryan
I realy have no idea what I am talking about but a guy told me he used a corvair steering box etc on his T, maybe someone else can add more.
I'm using a reversed Corvair box. I understand it is the popular unit due to weight and size. I have also seen Vega boxes used. Which one you use will probably depend on the other items used in your steering setup. I'm on my first T and my knowledge is limited, but my signature is a link to a T bucket website that I belong to. There are a lot of veteran builders there and they wouldn't mind answering a question or two.
Sounds like you are looking for the pitman arm hanging out the side of the cowl, do a search for mopar steering boxes here on this site. It was talked about in depth of how to mount the box behind the dash and run an extended link out the cowl for the pitman arm to hang on.
My steering set-up is a tube axle with a bolt on arm early Ford Spindles 4 inch drop..Hair Pin rods, typical T stuff...
Yhea Cowl Steering is what I'm leaning towrds but open to any and all ideas. My budget is limited on this build( as is everything in my life..LOL) So any safe cheap Ideas is tops...Ryan
A buddy of mine recommended the steering box out of an '89-? Suzuki Sidekick. He has one in a T build (4cyl) and it works nicely- AND they're plentiful/dirt cheap!
When I started my track-t, I wanted to use cowl steering. There are several threads on how to convert a modern steering box like the long Saginaw style manual box into a cowl steering setup. I changed my mind and decided to go with a cross steer because the pitman arm had to stick out far enough away from the 23 body so not to strike it. I didn't like that look. Also, I'm using tube shocks in the front and I could not install a steering arm off the front left spindle without interference. Corvair, Mustang and Vega boxes can all be ran mount on or under the frame rails if you want a side steering. It also depends on how you plan to sit inside the T. If your seat is high like most T Buckets then you will need a more upright steering setup. If you plan to sit low, like on the frame rails, then a more conventional steering wheel position will work. Go to NTBA and look at some of the members pictures. You will see many different setups.
