Ours had camera's in hopes we would stop complaining about crap happening to our cars, never worked, they never turned them on.
Best friend drove a lowered Dinan 3 BMW on some rediculously expensive wheels and we just learned to park his car and my c10 in the back of the parking lot and he'd go on the end and I'd park next to him to try and minimalize the people around doing crap. Its all about what you do with it. Park away from people when possible, and don't throw the car in positions where its rediculously vulnerable and you'll be fine in paint.

Parking is an issue as well. There are more cars than spots. Sophomores aren't even issued a parking permit.

get him a $1500.00 beater, and keep the cool stuff for hot rod functions.that's my plan for my son.

  5. Well, if further damage is a certainty, I would certainly drive a beater.

The school's disinterest in stopping this problem reminds me of the so-called Broken Window Theory, which says that minor disorder, such as the visible results of vandalism, be they broken windows, graffiti, etc., if left unrepaired leads to further, more serious disorder and criminality. Unless the school communicates the fact that it has zero tolerance for this kind of 'small stuff', then bigger stuff will start happening with greater frequency.

  6. same shit is happening over here as well root , my daughters truck got keyed more than a few times and i finally said fuck it and bought her a beater to drive to school , some asshats just love to key cars and i dont think it really matters whos car it is..... i would love to catch one sometime..

:( That is a insulting comment!! Trucking is a proffesion that is heavely regulated by the D.O.T. We are randomly drug tested.
I'm sick of every mention of any driving related thing involving some negative comment about truckers . Damn if not for truckers you would not have anything. You would be naked, hungry in the woods!!!! If you got it it was safly transported by a trucker redneck or not!!!! THANKS

My son is a senior this year and hates to drive his El Camino to school for these same reasons. He has sat in the parking lot and watched kids open car doors into the car next to them without a second thought. He told me about watching the teacher patrolling the lot in the morning set their coffee cup on the roof of some kid’s car. So it’s not just the kids. When he does drive he makes sure he parks between two of his friends.

I know this gonna sound stupid but flat black the car and key it yourself. At least then you will know who did it. I can almost bet that being 16 and having a cool car at some point some dickhead will key it or do something to, so just get it over with and not worry about it.

Listen to the masses. You cannot "What If" forever. You, and your kid will be glad you did the Car "Right" the 1st time. Just make sure you get good insurance and If anything happens to it, then worry about it.

Never happened to me, as my cars usually look too shitty already, but....

Some time ago someone, I never found out who, drove a cute little classic Alfa Romeo. It looked pretty rough at first, but slowely it got a new panel here, some dents fixed there, some rust fixed up somewhere else. One day I turn up to work and there it was: pretty shiny bright red coat of new paint on it.

Within a week some f*ckhead had keyed it, from the taillight all the way across the front fender.

Now I never see that car anymore. Hope the guy just moved or changed jobs or something and that he didn't give up and just drives a Mazda now...

Makes you want to put 20,000 Volts on the chassis when you park. That would teach them...

  14. Just my 2 cents but I would continue on and build it right. If you're worried about damage to the paint, then just lay some primer on it and live happily ever after. At least if something does happen, won't be as much work to fix it.

Something stupid and vandalous could happen to anyone of us at any place.

I moved from California to Texas in '92. Three day drive, exhausted, finally made it. Go to the store, come back out... voila... the whole side of my truck keyed. Welcome to Texas! You don't know when or where it's gonna happen, all you can do is pray that you walk out while they're doing it. Build the car the way you want it, if you don't, they win...

I once had a bum key my old 60' Chevy because I would not give him any money. I tried to chase him down but he was to far away from me. anyway another (his buddy) bum saw all of this and went over to speak with him about what was going on in this parking lot. After a few words between them, this guy cocked his arm back and smacked him right in the nose BANG! blood pouring out of his face, tears coming out of his eyes.... It was the best, "instant gratification" I bought that guy a chicken dinner!

But isn't it also true that if the school's budget is too tight to provide additional security for the students' cars, they will ban the students from driving to school. Chances are the students who park at school sign a waiver that releases the school from liability from damages to the cars

I wouldn't let it stop you from finishing your build. Build it and just enjoy it. It could have been a whole lot worse than being keyed. I take the train to work and someone scraped down the entire side of my car, going deeper the closer they got to the rear wheel surround. Every panel had to be worked and repainted. Since you can't pin it on someone else, it counts as an at-fault accident up here, so most people, me included pay out of their own pocket.

Does stuff like this make me paranoid or change my patter of use; absolutely. That's why I make a big distinction between a "driver" and a car of interest.

The police up here only focus on revenue generating activities. (i.e. parking, speeding, no complete stop, etc. tickets) rather than crimes that cost money to investigate, especially if insurance policies will pick up some of the tab. Three people I know have had their 1-2 year old luxury cars ($40-50K) stolen in the last 6 months. On two occations, the police didn't even attend. They took a verbal report and gave them the "call your insurance co. line". Other than filling out paper work and putting it in their database, they did fuck all. Even if you got the tapes, did the investigation and put the case together professionally on a silver platter they may be vaguely interested. If your talking minors, don't even waste the paper or your breath. Nothing will happen.

Shitty, but a fact of life these days until our laws change and the police get rewarded once again for solving crimes and laying charges, not meeting quotas to increase fine revenue.:(

I never had a problem with my truck at my high school, but then again I went to a smaller school. I don't know if anyone else has said this or not, but I think most high school aged kids will walk right past an old car because it's not their thing. They would rather go after a new car. That's just my opinion on the matter. I say flatten whatever color he wants for the car and let him drive it like that to high school so it's still nice, but not too nice to tempt the heathens.

Hate to tell ya but if he drives a car like that to school a good keying would be lucky. Most likely he'll get worse. Those fucking kids dont like anyone having any they cant have. Prime it then paint it after College. Or......Shoot anybody that gets close to it. I choose the latter!

Just build it with your son, exactly how you planned in the first place, and your son will never forget it.

My father and I did just this, and there were similar problems at the school I went to, but you know, my truck nor his 33 coupe never got messed with.

Insure it, and let your son drive it with pride and enjoy the hell out of it....

Just build how you wanna build it. It does suck hard though. I just bought a new daily and had it for 5 days an 288 miles before someone slammed me in a parking lot and split. I had it parked way in the back with no other cars around! I was so f'n pissed I almost flipped. I think someone saw my brand new car, all shiny, with paper plates and just decided to be a dick. Don't worry man. Karma is a BITCH and they will get what they deserve. Don't let it stop you from building YOUR car the way YOU want it.

    Later, T.

    2 words.
    Home
    School

I have no fund raisers every 6 weeks, I would have had to buy pencils and paper and the box get passed from one kid to the other and then on to others. Our shop class is building a '54 Chevy truck! You are welcome to come to the thrash.

  26. I would not worry about what might happen. It seems like you already know what will.

Like mentioned before, the kids that do that type of thing hate everyone that has something better than they do.

Rent a BMW and let your kid drive it for a day or 2. And sit back and wait. Take pictures, and forward them to the PD.
    Put their asses in jail.

Of course, their buddies will know who did it, and will burn your kids car to the ground. Or beat him up..

The future of America isn't looking so great.

Sorry you have to deal with this bullshit. Where the hell did common respect for others go?
