Josh, This car is a V6 with an automatic trans. It was designed and built from a pile of tubing and a roll of fiberglass. I designed a space frame for more useable foot and leg space. See more pix and slide show of this car at
    http://www.myrideisme.com/Garage/macmiller/238

It is going to Terra Haute for some laps today(Sun.May4).

    Mac miller,

Very good... The cars I'm building now.. I'm moving the Engine forward for leg room. After I got my dads done, it dawned on me that there was no "real" reason to put everything at "True sprint car specs" I didn't need to shave tenths, or create more rear bite. Its for the street, might as well make it comfortable. I looked at dads, and I could have moved the engine forward FIVE inces!! What a diference that would have made...

Oh, and about Santa Maria Speedway. It was Okay. Not the Midwest! The cars were good quality, but had to run HUGE mufflers that really quieted them down a lot! Sounded like a bunch of high school kids in their 5.0 mustangs. The crowd was another thing.. My Fiance and I were Amazed at how Ill-informed and "non-racer" it was. Just a bunch of drunk idiots that acted as if they had never been to a race track.. The younger crowd was dressed like they were giong to the "club" straight from the track. But, like Beth said, "They probly were.. That was probably the BIG THING to do on a Sat. night in Sant Maria!"

But in all... IT WAS OPEN WHEEL SPRINTERS ON DIRT!! It could have been a handfull in a middle of the desert and I'd have paid my money to see it!

The only 2+ Indy winners that were alive or not in diapers in 1960, would be A.J., J.R., Ward or the Unsers and he doesn't really resemble any of them, but if I had to guess, it would be Ward (?)

  18. AJ would have been obvious. Rutherford was on the IMCA trail, just a year out of Dallas. Ward looked older than this in '60. Bobby would have been obvious too. BUT AL, had a baby face and was still in NM willing to go west on occasion. In fact this might be the sprinter he converted from an old super his brother used to drive.

I forgot about Gordo, he would have fit in that time line also, but it don't look much like him either.

Smokey Snelbakers Pa. sprinter. Yeah it looks like its right off Williams Grove Speedway around 1972 or so. Looks authentic but its a long way from Pa. (?)

  24. 1970 Bobby Allen chassis, driven by Smokey Snellbaker. The car showed up I think at Knoxville recently with the owner short on cash. It was picked up by a guy out of northern OK. He was trying to sell it at Pate. Don't know much about the current owner.

Bobby Allen chassis were considered the Caddy sprinters for their time. So much in fact Jan Opperman demanded such a car in order to run for Bogar. This was a tall order since Bogar was out to market his own brand and Allen only made 5 per year, and they were a bit pricey I'm sure. It was not until later when he ran the Heintzelman chassis, who worked for Bogar and Barry Camp, that he found the Heinz' chassis more to his liking.

Both are very much alike yet the measurements are different in suspension geometry.

I have to agree, RW had kinda a baby face but by 1960 he was quite mature looking. Here's a pic of big Al a little later in the 60s and he would be the likely choice.

The Heintzelman built Bogar 99 "shitbox"

    Attached Files:

  28. The crazy part is, the Shitbox was arc welded since he had no tig.

When it was restored, the pieces that were welded back together were done first in tig, and then gone over with a cracker box arc welder.

  29. Lloyd Ruby of Witchita Falls Texas. A definite kickass driver of his time. The 1968 Hoosier Hundred in a rear engined car. I am still trying to drink a beer with this guy.
