I'm about 90% done with the build of my '37 Plymouth, and would like to put it on the road (legally) this summer. The headlites, taillights, running boards, etc are all modified, so it won't qualify for an antique plate (no State inspection required), but I have heard horror stories about the ringer the State puts you thru to get a Street Rod plate. I'd like to run no bumpers and no hood sides, but can I legally get inspected with those mods, if I just keep a standard vehicle registration plate?
Looks like you gotta go see somebody and have a metric **** ton of paperwork done before you venture to the registration office. http://www.google.com/search?q=Pa DMV street rod registration
My limited experience would say LEGALLY no. The car has to look 100% stock to be tagged as a 'standard' car. However I see it all the time. Like always it depends on the inspection station first and then the cop that sees you, his knowledge and probably his mood at the time as to whether he'll ticket you or not. Also what you did to make him look at you in the first place. I obviously had to have my T licensed as a street rod. It was built with no ***le so I had to go through that. I didn't really have much trouble. Of course that was BEFORE the new super inspection. I just went to a normal inspection station had it inspected and got the pictures signed. Took less than an hour. then I sent the application and receipts through a local State Representative to PennDOT. I didn't use a notary, that was the secret! Harisburg is VERY interested in their sales tax. With 1 rejection it was 5 1/2 weeks from the aplication until I had a plate and ***le. The rejection was for not enough sales tax. Good Luck Bill
Part of my problem is that I have been working on this car for over four years, and I bought many of my parts so long ago that I no longer have the receipts. I have heard that for a Street Rod registration, you don't need bumpers or hood sides, but you need to submit all kinds of receipts, so I'm out of luck there. I think the car would p*** State inspection with a standard registration plate, except for the missing bumpers and hood sides. Does anyone know if bumpers and hood sides are actually required for a standard State inspection in Pa?
If the hood is on it you are OK there but you will need bumpers to run a regular plate unless you know someone that may let it through. I just took the bumpers off my Willy's after inspection and never replaced them when it was time for another. They didn't ask any questions.
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, maybe I'll just make sure it has the hood and bumpers on it for the first inspection, and take it from there, rather than go thru the ringer for a Street Rod registration.
HomeMadeHardtop, If you are reading this, I may need you to punch some louvers in my hood sides, once I get around to fabricating them............
I've got some web links I can post from home. You can run without hood sides (I do) and you no longer need fenders-curiously,for years, the car on the street rod license plate would not have p***ed PA inspection. You do need bumpers, and turn signals, and a back-up light. Try to ac***ulate as many receipts as you can, especially for the major stuff. Make copies, don't send originals. Do***ent as much as you can. You'll need a street rod plate and a two part inspection, done at one of the approved locations-not a regular inspection station. Make certain you send your application through your state representative, not a ***le service or AAA. They'll walk it over and through. Much less h***le,much faster. PM me if you have questions.
