Whats the best way to fill the holes for a smooth peaked look aka 57 corvette. Im restoring a mid 60s 57 custom. The original hood that came with the car got wrecked by a .tree that got in the road. It looks they used a half of a tail light shell, a piece of sheet metal, and 5 pounds of lead.
i dont remember the diameter of the rocket openings, but i recall reading about using the same dia. exhaust pipe w/ a bend in it. weld it in and lead or plastic filler mold it in. i think it was in one of the barris custom books. this my not be the answer yer lookin' for, but it just mite get the gears turnin' in yer head.
I used 90 degree, 3" mandrel bend exhaust tubing to fill one of the hood's for my 57. Made a template of the opening as best i could with poster board and traced it to the pipe. Then final fit by grinding and slight m***aging. Worked perfect. Tony
I seem to recall them using '39 Chevy taillight housings years ago to fill in the bullets on a '57 Chevy hood.........maybe one of those housings could be cut in half and used for both? Just a thought.... CB
On mine Bill Hines reskinned it with a Pontiac skin making the whole thing smooth not just shaving the ornaments. I have not been able to find a copy of the mag issue with this in it. It would probably be Custom Rodder late 80's.
i have 'RULES' when it comes to hood welding. - rules are: Whomever welds on the hood, finishes the hood! in other words never let a welder or friend of yours or whoever do the welding & then hand it over saying im done here you go. seen & heard this happen a dozen times. you get an oil can back to finish. ------------ dont have info on welding the gun sites shut but its a COOOL modification!
