Well I've had the roadster (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252576 ) for a few weeks now and wanted to make some small changes. Although I really liked the full hood with sides I also like the look with just the top part. I started to look at it to see how best to run it with just the top and couldn't find a way of securing it down without either drilling holes or running st****s over, which would wear the paint, so I just made a new hood from ally as an exact copy of the original including the hinge. Went to the local saddlers and bought some leather straps and made some br*** loops riveted with copper rivets to keep the straps from sliding forward. Made up four br*** plates with holes in to hook up to the original hood catches. I like the style of it and still have the option of fitting all the original hood panels at a later date if wish...........Pete
Cool , sets your car apart from others .... some race/engine lettering on the hood sides would look perfect , but that's just my humble opinion .
Great job... The cool thing is if one day you wake up and decide it's not your thing, it's easily removable and you can go back to the original setup. A little paint and shine will make it even look better. Great job again...
Very nice - great combination of copper, br***, aluminum and leather. Just for fun, I would polish the aluminum a bit.
Wondered if you would advise us on the alloy type and thickness? For Al-lu-min-ium it looks mighty fine. Hope I pronounced that right!
That's cool, very British, but the juxtaposition with the Ford roadster really makes it work. The chunky br*** holdfasts add a touch of solid workmanship that along with the unfinished aluminum both on top and under (on the motor) contrast nicely with the glossy back body. Superb.
Thanks for all the compliments guys. It just gives me the option of changing the look of the car when I want. I used an off cut of 1.2mm soft ally, nothing special so I used a stainless hinge pin and also a 1/4" stainless bar on each side to support it. Sorry I didn't take any pics just did it, only took a couple of hours to make the hood and another couple to make the br*** hold downs. All the matterials used were just bits I had around except for the belts. The br*** bits were cut from a small 1/8" s**** sheet that was once used for the switch panel on some machine and was full of holes so had to cut around them. The copper rivets and br*** screws were in a box of bits that came from my wifes grandads shed when he died several years ago. All in all I think I only spent about 5 hours working on it, still got some rubbing to do and I'll finish it with a dull shine from fine paper and cuting compound.
