Source for Lake Header Tubing?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by TexasHardcore, Apr 18, 2008.

  1. Looking to see if anyone sells steel tapered tubing like used on the Lake Headers we all love. Would the Megaphone tips like Speedway & Summit sell be the same or too thin? I think they are 2-1/4"x4"x30".

Would also like to know. I was told once that there was a company making table legs that worked great, but they went out of business. There is a place that makes cones for this application, but they might be just stainless and if I recall they were a little on the pricey side.

I looked all over for nice, subtle off-t******lf cones for my rpu exhaust -- with no luck. I wound up going to the Van Bebber brothers in Santa Rosa, CA. They rolled and welded exactly what I needed: 1.625" at one end, 2.125" at the other, and 23 inches long. Great work, fast delivery, good price I felt for two totally custom cones.

    They're at 707-762-4528.

The cone starts at the first port, then tapers up to the size of the side pipe:

Your RPU is a sweet looking ride. Great stance and proportions. Good job.

Mine (from lakeheaders.com) I believe were rolled out of sheet metal and seam welded.

The best tubes to use are the driveshafts off of 1936 fords, not the outer torque tube. They have a very nice taper to them and the best part of it is that you are cutting up old ford parts....
These are a set that my friend made for his underpowered roadster...

If you want turn outs, get a 2-1/4" j-bend with a 24" straight leg. Cut a pie shaped wedge out on the back side starting at 1-1/2" at the open end down to where the bend starts. Place 4, S.S. hose clamps over the tube and draw the edges together. Tweek the seam with a hammer and a piece of round rod 'til it matches apiece of 1-5/8" tube. Weld the seam up. For the pipes between the header flange and the tapered tube, go to a muffler shop and get 8 pieces of 1-5/8" pipe with a 70 degree bend in them. Trim 'em to fit and weld up your header.

Go to your parts store and pick up a 2-1/4", 2 or 3 bolt gasket before you fab the block off plate and it's flange. There are different spacings on the bolts so you need the gasket first.Use hi temp anti-seize on the bolts.

You should end up with something like this:

I've bought the ones from Speedway and Cone Engineering. Both really good. Also seen guys make their own. Little work but it's possible.

i just took a piece of 3" exhaust pipe, and pie cut it and rolled it in a vice with hose clamps.
