    hi!
i'm hoping some one out there in h.a.m.b. land can steer me in a good direction for buying "tuxedo" or "suede" black satin paint. i have just finished sanding and primering my '64 valiant and am now looking for a vendor for this paint, and if there was any local places (i'm in san diego) that would super rock!
thank you for your time and have a great day!

It always surprises me when a FNG asks a real question they often get little response.
Try a John Deere dealer for Blitx Black, it`s about $30 a gallon and when thinned a bit goes on smooth and has the right combination of flat/low gloss. Good luck.

what about; "Dupont Hot Hues Hot Rod Black?"
and another question about the paint; my body work teacher, er... guru would really like to keep it super old school (like him) and use the kind that brushes on. anyone heard of that being made in this century?
thank you for all replies to this little fng!
    whatever that means... :)

  6. Do you mean.... Rustoleum? Which comes in gallon cans in most any big hardware store? Or you can use the True-Value equivalent, Rust-X (oil base). That stuff has held up fairly well on a couple quick and dirty paint jobs for us.

Dupli-Color Gloss Black, (available at Murrays auto parts) PPG Flattening agent mixed - 1/2 can to a gallon of paint (I think that's what we did for Marc's ride...he may chime in here...)

if you go with the JD blitz black make sure you also buy the primer/sealer and activator, i had my coupe shot with it and it's held up very well. it thins with regular paint thinner. it's even available in spray cans for touch-ups. you can order it online and have it shipped to your nearest JD dealer for pickup.
i have the part numbers if you need them, P/M me. mike

$200 paint job in a box.
    Two questions:
Why Flat black? The body looks decent. Go shiny.
Why brush on? Your "Body Guru" doesn't own a spray gun?

BRUSH it on?? Seriously?? Don't do it!!
Why work hard to make your car look like you spent 20 minutes on a Saturday morning slapping paint on it?
(Incidentally, you can brush on lacquer-based primer. If you have O'Reilly Auto Parts in your area, they sell the stuff for a few bucks a quart. At least then you can sand it down and paint it for real much easier than if you use Rustoleum or Blitz Black.)

There is a reason body shops use spray booths and paint guns. Brushed on doesn't look as good. I used Rustoleum, because it is not permanent, I have lots of work to do.

pretty sure Hot Rod Flatz paint is what was used on both Ronald and Phillip's cars.

I used spray cans of Rustoleum, semi gloss, because I wanted my car one color, looks good for the time being. This route is just as expensive as doing it the right way with a spray gun and actual primer. Should have listened to the old guys telling me what to do! Lesson learned the hard way. The only benefit to this is that if you ding your car its easily fixed. I agree that the roll on paint jobs don't look great. I have had people tell me they liked how it turned out and if I wouldn't have told them they wouldn't have known. Like everyone says do it right from the begining and you will be more satisfied with the result and future fixes, I'm still learning that one..

I was thinking about using the Hot Rod Flatz and was wondering if the quart kit is enough for a novice painter to cover an entire car..??

Rustoleum® Satin patio paint!!!!! (Not the rattle can, the quart can) $8 a can at OSH, Homeboy Depot.. I'm not kidding. Happy Hoppy did this on my merc with 2 quarts!!! Looks just like the old DP90 at a tenth of the price!!!

Thin it with acetone and spray. He used Hot Rod Flatz on another car the week before he sprayed mine and HATED the stuff. I already had HRF'z ($120.00) and never used it. We used Rustoleum® and I'm stoked! -stick

I have had good luck with Rustoleum semi gloss black thinned about 50/50 with mineral spirits. It comes out flat but not too flat.

Same topic, I used Rustoleum thinned and added regular Dupont hardner and brushed the floor's, backe seat and package tray area and it look's great. Seal's the metal too, till the interior come's along. Do your best to spray the outside of your ride. It will lay mush flatter. Alway's use a cartridge mask when using paint/solvent's. Keep us posted on your work.

Brushed on will look like poop as it will have lines in it. At least roll it on (seriously)
