Just curious. As I am putting together a Ford 302, I am learning just how many differences there are in things that you need to keep straight. Things like pushrod length depending on the heads, what balancer to use when (28 or 50oz), and little things like that. How about Mopar's? Like 318's, 340's, 360's? Can you swap much a**** these motors with out such issues? Do they have changes through out the years you have to watch out for when mixing parts?
273,318,340 are all internally balanced. 360's are externally balanced so you have to use and externally balanced torque converter with a 360. do not use and externally balanced converter on a 318,273, or 340, don't ask me how I know, lol. later shawn
they are pretty simple with swapping parts, a lot of peopel cry about how you cant use the same ****** on a big block and small block, oh and a slant. big deal.
273s and 318s share motor mounts, the 340s and 360s take a different one on one side (frame brackets are the same). 72 340s can have, and 73 340s do have cast cranks, and DO require external balancing. 360s have larger main bearings, and like the cast crank 340s require external balancing (different amount). They also don't take the same oil pan as the other LA motors. They all share the same bellhousing pattern.
Oops sorry about that wrong info about the 340, I've been away from the mopar stuff a little. Sorry, later shawn
They're almost as interchangeable as Chevys. Ford liked to roll out something different about 3 times each model year, didn't they? -Brad
