I have the opportunity to buy a 55 caddy. still has the original V8. Batwing and all. Just curious what size it is and how it would perform in comparison to a dual quad 283 sbc.

I believe '55 still used the 331 and the 365's came out in '56. I'm sure one of the Caddy guru's will chime in with more accurate details.

Should be a 331, don't know much about them though...usually good torque in caddy motors

A 331 is one of the most sought after Cadillac engines.

Correct: '55 uses the 331, the last year of this '49-55 displacement.

    For '55, the Caddy 331 4bbl puts out 250 HP @ 4600 at 9:1 CR.
    Torque was 345 @ 2800.
Eldorado dual-quad 331 was good for 270 HP.

The 331 in my 55 Caddy moves it along just fine!! The 331 probably has more torque then the 283, **** maybe even more h.p.

55 is the last year of the 331 but it's also the first year of the short bellhousing. The early cads 49-54 are the best engines in my opinion because you can bolt a Lasalle or a early hydro trans right up to them.
